---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Systems Give Competitive Edge To Brazilian Bank SunFLASH Vol 41 #4 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Banco Bamerindus Moves to Sun Platform for Trading MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --April 28, 1992-- Banco Bamerindus do Brazil, one of the largest banks in Brazil, with 1,400 branches, purchased more than 45 workstations and servers from Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) to be used in its investment trading operations. The Sun computers will connect three trading room floors in Sao Paulo, Rio and Curitiba, providing realtime access to applications and data running on computers located in various locations. The Sun computers will be used to enhance the bank's current investment trading activities, such as securities, commodities, and short- and long-term treasury trading. "We needed a new platform that would allow us to integrate our existing systems and to run new trading applications," said Marcos de A. Jacobsen, treasurer, investments director and sponsor of the project. "SMCC, with its large customer base, wide array of off-the-shelf third-party software, adherence to open standards and a good understanding of our needs, was a natural choice," said Antonio H. V. Perrotta, head of information technology for the investments department. Previously, the traders at the bank used multiple detached systems, including 3270 terminals (for analytics and position keeping), PCs (for spreadsheets), and stand-alone quotation terminals that delivered outside information, such as stock, commodities and news information. All of this information was piped into the trading floor via a PC-based, read-only video switch that was designed in-house. The video signal was displayed on racks of video monitors residing on the trader's desks and on large television monitors suspended from the ceiling. Traders can now use tools provided by FD Consulting and other vendors for real-time data display, composite paging, graphics, historical information display and graphics, and Lotus 1-2-3 realtime spreadsheets. Additional trading software from Algorithimics, a Toronto company, gives senior officers real-time risk measurement, management and hedging tools that monitor the bank's entire asset and liability range. "We think the Sun platform gives Bamerindus a competitive edge in Brazil and also will help us compete effectively in the worldwide market," said Marcos Jacobsen. Bamerindus is famous for its innovative and aggressive policies, reflected in this first Sun-based digital trading room installation in Latin America. PR contacts: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp.
