---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunPro Enhances Sun Ada Development Environment SunFLASH Vol 41 #3 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The leading Ada Language System and Toolset for the SPARC Platform is Now Faster and More Versatile MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- April 28, 1992 -- SunPro, the Sun Microsystems, Inc. business that develops, markets and supports products for professional programmers, today unveiled an enhanced version of its Sun Ada Development Environment. The new version, 1.1, can enhance the performance of user applications by up to 30 percent, based on measured improvements in industry-standard PIWG* (Performance IssuesWorking Group) benchmarks. The product is now compatible with the VADScross family of cross-development products from Verdix Corp., giving developers a common toolset with the same user interface for host and target systems development. It also contains an interface to SCCS, the popular UNIX utility forsource file version control. The Sun Ada Development Environment, which consists of the Sun Ada compiler and the SPARCworks/Ada integrated toolset, now comes with network licensing, enabling groups of users to share the software rather than purchase individual copies. "SunPro has become a leader in the Ada market because we build the fastest, most productive product on the leading open UNIX platform," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of SunPro. "The new version of the Sun Ada Development Environment extends our edge over other products by significantly boosting application performance and shortening development time." The Sun Ada Development Environment is the industry-leading Ada language system and toolset for the SPARC platform, with a rapidly-growing installed base of more than 2,000 seats worldwide. Version 1.1 includes SPARCworks/Ada 1.1, a powerful suite of tools that enhance programmer productivity by speeding and simplifying the tasks Ada developers do most often, plus Sun Ada 1.1, the industry's fastest, most robust Ada compilation system. SPARCworks/Ada 1.1 consists of AdaVision, an object-based user interface to the Sun Ada Development Environment; dbtool, which provides a tightly-integrated graphical debugging environment; EditTool, which synchronizes compiler error messages with source code; and LRMTool, SunPro's on-line Ada Language Reference Manual. Sun Ada 1.1 features the fastest and most complete Ada compiler available for the SPARC platform. The Sun Ada Development Environment also includes the Ada XView Toolkit, which helps developers build X.11 graphics and windowing applications for SunSoft's OpenWindows environment, and GXV-Ada, a new tool that works with SunSoft's OpenWindows Developer's Guide (DevGuide) to interactively build and test graphical user interfaces in Ada. "With GXV-Ada users are able to develop their user interface much more quickly and with greater confidence than would otherwise be possible," said David Spenhoff, senior product manager at SunPro. "The combination of DevGuide and GXV-Ada can save months of development time and give users fully documented and easy-to-maintain Ada source code for their user interface." Pricing and Availability The Sun Ada Development Environment 1.1 product is available through Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. (SMCC), SunExpress, and authorized resellers worldwide. The suggested U.S. list price ranges from $10,000 for a single use license to $7,480 a license, as part of a 25 license package.
