---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Leading EDA Vendors Collaborate On CAD Framework Initiative Project SunFLASH Vol 41 #1 May 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun, Cadence, Harris, Mentor, Viewlogic and Synopsys To Work Together MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - May 4, 1992 - Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that it is sponsoring a CAD Framework Initiative (CFI) pilot project, "EDA Symphony," in cooperation with leading electronic design automation (EDA) vendors Cadence Design Systems, Inc., Harris Corporation EDA Division, Mentor Graphics Corp., Synopsys, Inc. and Viewlogic Systems, Inc. The goal of the pilot project is to integrate independent EDA tools and technologies into a single solution in order to prove the commercial viability of Inter-Tool Communication (ITC) technology as specified by the CFI Release 1.0 Pilot Program. ITC technology provides a common methodology for communication among tools from different EDA vendors. The Sun-sponsored project is one of four similar projects that are working to incorporate CFI Release 1.0 specifications into actual production-level design automation tools. "The incompatibility of today's EDA tools means that users have a great deal of difficulty mixing and matching them," said William Johnson, SMCC's director of corporate CAD and SPARC(R) business development. "The EDA Symphony pilot project will not only prove the commercial viability of CFI Release 1.0, but it will also provide the foundation upon which EDA vendors can build products that deliver ITC benefits to end users." The backbone of the pilot project is SunSoft's ToolTalk(TM) ITC technology, which allows applications to communicate transparently. In the EDA Symphony pilot project, these applications include: Cadence Design Systems o Allegro(TM) PCB layout and analysis tool o Composer(TM) schematic entry product o Design Framework II(TM) framework product o Verilog(R) behavioral and logic simulator Harris Corporation, EDA Division o Finesse(TM) MCM layout and analysis tool o Scicards(R) PCB layout and analysis tool Mentor Graphics o Design Architect(TM) schematic entry product o QuickSim(TM) logic simulator Synopsys o Design Compiler(TM) logic synthesis tool o Design Analyzer(TM) user interface and design analysis tool Viewlogic Systems o ViewDraw(TM) schematic entry system o ViewFrame(TM) framework product The CAD Framework Initiative Inc. was established in 1988 as an independent industry effort to promote standardization of the interfaces between computer-aided design (CAD) tools and the software environments ("frameworks") that support their use.
