---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunSoft, Tivoli To Develop Industry's First OMG-Compliant System Management Foundation SunFLASH Vol 39 #24 March 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SunSoft today announced that it will jointly develop the industry's first OMG-compliant foundation for system management with Tivoli Systems, the leading provider of object-oriented system management applications for distributed computer systems. The press release is attached for your reference. The products of the joint development will be incorporated into a future release of Solaris, as a component of SunSoft's Project DOE (Distributed Objects Everywhere). SMCC will make these technologies available to its customers as they become available from SunSoft. _____________________________________________________________________ Key Component Of SunSoft's Project DOE MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., --March 31, 1992-- Solidifying its leadership position in object-oriented technology, SunSoft today announced that it has entered into a joint development and technology sharing agreement with TIVOLI Systems, Inc. to create the industry's first system management foundation built on the Object Management Group (OMG) standard for distributed computing. By leveraging this widely-endorsed standard and WizDOM technology, SunSoft and TIVOLI will provide a consistent and powerful foundation for managing heterogeneous networked systems, significantly lowering the cost of system administration. The jointly developed technology, to be bundled with future versions of the Solaris solution, is a key component of SunSoft's vision of Project DOE (Distributed Objects Everywhere). Project DOE is a vision for a new computing paradigm where modular applications are created out of distributed objects that can interoperate across multiple platforms. SunSoft was instrumental in defining the OMG standard for distributed objects, which has been endorsed by 200 major computer vendors and consortia in the United States and Europe. SunSoft will unveil its road map for Project DOE in the next few months. "Administration of heterogeneous systems will be one of the first areas to experience the benefits of object technology," said Bill Coleman, vice president of system software at SunSoft. "Our partnership with TIVOLI enables us to combine the OMG standard with other emerging standards, providing interoperability across a full range of computing platforms and operating systems." SunSoft will integrate its system management facilities and distributed object management technologies, and TIVOLI will provide part of its WizDOM software to this framework. System management applications built on the common foundation will allow high-level centralized administration of networked systems while shielding administrators from the complexity of diverse operating systems and changing management policies. "SunSoft and TIVOLI are taking the lead in delivering a systems management framework that expedites the delivery of a new generation of system management tools on a broad range of systems," said Frank Moss, president of TIVOLI. "The best news is that users can begin solving their critical system management problems today using WizDOM applications, with the assurance that their investment will be preserved and extended into the future." Two TIVOLI WizDOM applications are available today on the Solaris 1.0 solution, allowing system administrators to add users, browse the entire system, make configuration changes, and perform other formerly complex management tasks using point-and-click and drag-and-drop features. Founded in 1989, TIVOLI Systems of Austin, Texas, is the premier provider of object-oriented system management applications and framework technology that dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of managing distributed computer systems. TIVOLI WizDOM technology was selected as a component for UNIX International's Atlas road map and as the baseline for the Open Software Foundation's DME (Distributed Management Environment) framework.
