---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC Reduces Prices On High-End 3-D Graphics Systems SunFLASH Vol 39 #16 March 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Desktop Memory, Monitor Prices Also Reduced MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --March 24, 1992-- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) has slashed prices on its high-end 3-D graphics workstations by nearly 30 percent, the company reported today. The fully configured models of the SPARCstation(TM)2GS and SPARCstation 2GT are now among the least expensive 3-D solids workstations in their class. "One of the reasons we are the workstation industry's highest-volume supplier is because we offer better value," said Larry Hambly, vice president of marketing at SMCC. "We also believe that lower prices will help us in an important quest: broadening the market for 3-D graphics. And aggressive prices lead to higher volumes, strenthening our `open graphics initiative' by attracting even more hardware and software developers to offer products for our platform." SMCC also reduced prices on 19-inch monitors, making its best-selling family of desktop workstations even more affordable. In addition, prices of add-on memory have been reduced. For example, a 16-megabyte memory expansion option is nearly 70 percent less expensive than a similar product from HP. The SPARCstation 2GS workstation is a cost-effective 3-D solids modeling system that integrates all critical 3-D functionality into a desktop CPU "pizza-box" package. At $22,495, it is an affordable system for any engineer. The SPARCstation 2GS is nearly 40 percent less expensive than IBM's competive offering, the RS/6000 320, and offers 40 percent faster vector performance and 75 percent faster polygon performance. It comes standard with 32 megabytes of memory, a 424-megabyte internal disk, 19-inch color monitor and offers 24-bit true color, 12-bit double buffering and 16-bit Z-buffering capabilities. The SPARCstation 2GT workstation is the ideal platform for high-end 3-D graphics and solids modeling, offering the industry's best hardware antialiasing. This system comes standard with 32 megabytes of memory, a 424-megabyte internal disk, 21-inch color monitor and offers 24-bit true color, 24-bit double buffering and 24-bit Z-buffering capabilities for $36,495. Desktop Configurations, Memory Options Reduced SMCC has reduced the price of various memory options and certain monitors for all its desktop configurations. These changes have affected the most popular configurations of these Sun systems. For example, SPARCstation IPX and SPARCstation 2GX workstations with 19-inch color monitors have been reduced by $1,000 each. The SPARCstation IPX with a 19-inch color monitor, 16 megabytes of memory, 207-megabyte internal SCSI disk and a 1.44-megabyte 3.5-inch internal floppy drive is now priced at $14,495. A version with a 424-megabyte internal disk is also available. The SPARCstation 2 with a 19-inch color monitor, 32-megabytes of memory, 424-megabyte internal SCSI disk and a 1.44-megabyte 3.5-inch internal floppy drive is now priced at $19,495. Add-on memory for SMCC's desktops are now priced as much as 68 percent less than memory from other desktop computer manufactuers, including DEC, IBM and HP. A 16-megabyte memory expansion option for all desktop systems is now offered for $1,300, while similar products from HP, IBM and DEC cost $4,000, $3,280 and $3,200 respectively.
