SunFLASH Vol 39 #12 March 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those of you that keep track of issue numbers, I messed up! I issued 39.08 twice! I have renumbered the second article numbered 39.08 to: 39.10 ClariNet Electronic Publishing Service -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Industry standard for 3-D graphics display - ideal for MCAD, AEC, Scientific Visualization - Displays graphics generated by any PEX program on the net, even from other vendors machines - Accelerates rendering of SunPHIGS 2.0 and other 2-D and 3-D graphics over the network - Complete SPARCstation GX, GXplus, GS, GT support - Works with OpenWindows Version 3, providing 24-bit visuals Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) announces SunPEX 1.0, a network-transparent 3-D extension to the X11/NeWS server. It allows graphics applications to be distributed transparently across the network taking full advantage of graphics acceleration. As a powerful extension to the X11/NeWS server, SunPEX is ideal for graphics-intensive customers in MCAD, AEC, and scientific research. SunPEX is ideal for inhouse developers using SunPHIGS, end-users that use applications that are "PEX-capable", and customers that require distributed accelerated 3-D graphics. An example might be a customer running atmospheric modeling/analysis programs on a Sun 4/690 or Cray and displaying the results on an SS2GT. The PHIGS/PHIGS PLUS Extension to X (PEX) protocol is an industry standard solution for distributing 3-D graphics. Under contract to the X Consortium, Sun developed the PEX Sample Implementation (PEX-SI), released with X11R5, which serves as the basis of all current industry implementations of PEX. SunPEX 1.0 is a fully accelerated, PEX-SI conformant implementation of the standard PEX protocol. It extends the X11/NeWS server to run 5 times faster (on average) than the PEX-SI server running on like configurations. Today's SunPHIGS 2.0 users, and in the near future users of other Sun graphics APIs, can create distributed graphics applications to transparently access any PEX-capable server. Thus, an application running on one machine can take full advantage of graphics acceleration on any Sun workstation on the network. SunPEX 1.0 supports all of the PHIGS and PHIGS PLUS features that are also offered with SunPHIGS 2.0. This includes wire frame 2-D and 3-D drawing, advanced curve and surface primitives, and lighting and shading attributes, all rendered within the display server itself, thus allowing for full acceleration when available. FEATURES AND BENEFITS --------------------- Features Benefits ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Accessible through SunPHIGS 2.0 No need to change application code to display across the network Fully conformant with PEX-SI Works with any API that emits PEX 5.0 from MIT. protocol.
