These are the latest versions of Aurora's popular line of parallel port SBus cards for SPARC(R) workstations. Over the last three years, the 10S and 210S products have been installed in thousands of SPARC systems world-wide. Both products include a simple-to-install SunOS(TM) device driver, a helpful User's Guide, a molded plastic breakout cable (210S only), and a one-year limited warranty. SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE IMPROVEMENTS PROVIDE INCREASED PERFORMANCE The Multiport Model 10S product provides a single Centronics-compatible parallel port interface for high-speed output to printers and plotters. The Multiport Model 210S product provides a single parallel port interface and two RS232 serial ports for connecting a wide variety of serial devices. Both products include the recently released V3.0 Aurora device drivers which achieve the optimal balance between higher output speed and demand on system resources. The parallel ports provide significantly faster output than serial printer connections, allowing the system to free up more quickly and spend time on more important tasks. These ports are now over 75X faster than a 19.2 kbits/sec serial port. Reducing the demand on system resources is a particularly important benefit during parallel and serial data transfers. A poorly designed product can cause the CPU to spend 90% of its time servicing I/O interrupts, significantly impacting application performance. In addition, the 210S serial ports now have 16 byte FIFO buffers on each send and receive channel, providing improved data integrity and better throughput at higher baud rates (e.g. 38.4k bits/sec). These serial port buffers further reduce demand on system resources, allowing more system power to be used for applications. "This announcement is an example of our on-going program of performance and functionality improvements to our products," says Brian Skidmore, Marketing Director at Aurora. "These enhancements, the assurance of compatibility with all SPARC systems, the broad range of configurations, and our standard Aurora Advantage benefits add up to the best value in SPARC parallel interface products." COMPATIBLE WITH HUNDREDS OF OUTPUT DEVICES AND POSTSCRIPT SOLUTIONS The 10S, 210S, and the dual parallel port Multiport Model 20S+(TM) offer full support for hundreds of printing devices. These products connect to printing devices using virtually every type of marking technology available, including ink jet, dot matrix, color thermal, laser printers and electrostatic plotters. The serial ports on the 210S product are also compatible with printer, digitizers, modems, terminals, and other serial devices. Both the parallel and serial ports are compatible with PostScript(TM) printing solutions such as NeWSprint(TM) 2.0 software from SunPics(TM), and Freedom of the Press from Computer Applications, Inc. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY Multiport Model 10S - $395.00 Multiport Model 210S - $595.00 Available immediately, each of these products includes a simple-to-install, optimized device driver, a helpful User's Guide, a one year limited warranty, maintenance for the first year, and telephone support for the life of the product. These products have a user base in the thousands, having sold steadily since their introduction more than two years ago. DaCosta) Subject: eNFS/Cache INTERSTREAM INC. ANNOUNCES EXPANDED NFS CLIENT CAPABILITIES Interstream has announced the availability of its eNFS/Cache product which reduces network and server load on NFS networks. eNFS/Cache provides unique features not currently available in standard NFS. Specifically, eNFS/Cache allows NFS clients to build disk caches of frequently used data for access at a future time. eNFS/Cache saves file data, symbolic links, and directory information on the client's local disk. These caches are completely transparent to the user and may be chosen on a mount point by mount point basis. A typical cache of 50 MB of disk space will result in approximately 90% of all NFS reads being executed locally without accessing the server. System administrators wishing to free local disk space can move /usr and other directories to the server and allow eNFS/Cache to populate its local disk cache as needed. In a busy network, eNFS/Cache reduces the amount of network traffic by reducing the number of client reads. Users of eNFS/Cache will benefit from reduced server and network load. Users accessing files over a WAN, experiencing heavy network traffic, or who are dependent on slower NFS servers for their client's NFS reads can benefit from the eNFS/Cache product. eNFS/Cache conforms to all NFS protocols and is completely stateless. eNFS/Cache also comes with its own cachestats program which tracks all client NFS read and cache hits. Users may, at their option, select a response threshold which determines when an NFS client will attempt to read from the client's disk cache rather the NFS server. INTERSTREAM is expanding eNFS/Cache to support disconnected operations. Disconnected operation will allow NFS clients to continue to operate during times of brief server interruptions. Limited support for disconnected NFS read operations will be available in the third quarter of 1992. Full support for disconnected read/write operations will be available by year end. eNFS/Cache, in conjunction with eNFS (Interstream's NFS write accelerator) provides Sun's NFS users with additional options to leverage their workstation investment.
