It incorporates a 3.3, 5.0, 6.6, or 8.0 GB high-speed fault-tolerant disk array utilizing "hot-pluggable" drives to eliminate computer downtime due to a disk failure. The RAID Box implements level 5 R.A.I.D. (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). Using disk striping, the array reads and writes data and error correction information across five independent disk drives. If a single drive fails, enough information is available on the remaining disks to allow the data to be completely reconstructed. Special removable drive modules in the RAID Box allow disks to be replaced while the system is up and running. If a disk drive fails, the user simply pulls out the old drive and plugs in a replacement. Even during the drive replacement, the RAID Box provides continuous availability of data and automatically rebuilds "lost" data on the replacement drive. The Box Hill RAID Box is compatible with SUN computers. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ BOX HILL Systems Corporation 161 Avenue of the Americas 212.989.4455 o New York, N.Y. 10013 o FAX:212.989.6817 email: raid@boxhill.com +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: dlt@pt.com (Don Turrell) Newsgroups: comp.newprod Subject: PTI SBus Comm Controller Supports New Sftwr Tools and Protocols Organization: Performance Technologies, Incorporated Performance Technologies Adds Comprehensive Communication Software Tools and Protocol Support to Its High Speed Synchronous SIO SBus Controllers For SPARCstations and SPARCservers Performance Technologies, Incorporated of Rochester, NY, USA has announced availability of a variety of new protocol and enabling software packages for high speed serial communication applications on SPARCstations and SPARCservers. The new software enhances the Company's line of intelligent high speed add-in Synchronous Serial I/O controllers for SBus. The software products include new low level SPARCstation compatible development tools for the SPARCstation, a unique STREAMS based Tool Kit with templates and a port of the well known SpiderX.25 software. The low level and STREAMS development software is specifically designed to provide a convenient, well documented environment for the OEM or Communication System Integrator who is porting communication protocols to the run on SPARCstation or SPARCserver platforms. The basic tools designed to operate with the Performance Technologies Model PT-SBS332 SIO Communication SBus controller encompass various loadable UNIX device drivers for a host running SunOS, a full Open Windows based debug/monitor (PTbug) as well as a collection of useful programs and utilities that interact with various functional elements of the PT-SBS332 controller. A STREAMS development and operating environment is supplied through the unique communication "ProtoKit" developed by UconX Corp., a third party organization that specializes in data communication products, training and support. The comprehensive and time saving ProtoKit includes an integrated set of functional elements with an extensive client Application Programming Interface (API), software development support tools, a STREAMS based executive (xSTRa) and Bisyn, HDLC and Asynchronous protocol templates. "ProtoKit" training and specialized communication protocol porting services are optionally available from UconX. The PT-SBS332 SBus communication controller is also available with a complete Spider Systems Ltd. X.25 port, including optional X.3, X.28, X.29 capability. The internationally recognized SpiderX.25 is reported by Dataquest to be the leading X.25 package being shipped by UNIX computer manufactures. The PTI SpiderX.25 port has been highly tuned to provide optimum performance and throughput with the onboard intelligence of the PT-SBS332 controller. The new software tools and protocols available through PTI have been optimized to make full use of the architecture of the PT- SBS332 High Speed Synchronous Controller hardware. This PTI product is an intelligent, high speed serial interface that operates as an add-in SBus option to expand the capability of SPARCstations, SPARCserver 600MPs and SPARCstation clones. The recently designed PT-SBS332 controller is based on the Company's experience with a well established line of high performance VMEbus Synchronous Serial I/O products used by many major OEMs. The microprocessor based PT-SBS332 is built on an architecture which includes the Zilog Z16C35 Integrated Serial Communication Controller (ISCC) and a Motorola MC68340 Integrated Processor. The dual channel Z16C35 is software compatible with the popular Z85C30 found in thousands of serial I/O applications. The MC68340 CPU, coupled to 2 MBytes of onboard memory is specifically architected to deal with the real time nature of high speed communications. This design eliminates the shortcomings of a non-intelligent SBus SIO module which relies on the SPARCstation to service all the low level communication functions. The PT-SBS332 supports communication rates up to T1/E1 on both ports. The PT-SBS332 utilizes PTI's Line Adapter Board (LAB) concept to provide user flexibility in meeting a variety of communication interfaces. By interchanging LABs, the controller can support EIA-232C, EIA-422/530, Mil Std 188C/114, or V.35 line standards. The UconX ProtoKit from Performance Technologies is priced at a one time charge of $5000/site. Pricing for the SpiderX.25 protocol software is due to be released in April when the port completes certification. The PT-SBS332 controller platform with a EIA-232C line interface is priced at $1395. Performance Technologies designs, manufactures and markets a variety of products for SBus, VMEbus, VERSAbus, Qbus and Multibus I. ParcPlace's C++ product line now includes a user interface builder, Objectbuilder\C++, and a C++ graphics class library, Objectkit\C++ OI. The new products work with Objectworks\C++, ParcPlace's C++ development environment. Both Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI enable developers to create sophisticated GUIs quickly that allow runtime selection between OSF/Motif and OPEN LOOK. Programmers now can create a single version of an application to support either environment's standard user interface. "These new products combined with Objectworks\C++ are exactly what UNIX GUI C++ developers tell us they have been seeking," said Doug Pollack, ParcPlace's vice president of marketing. "ParcPlace's latest release of Objectworks\C++ has performance improvements to support large C++ GUI class libraries used with significant applications." Objectworks\C++ is fully compatible with Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI. Objectbuilder\C++ allows developers to quickly design an application's GUI, maintaining consistency with C++ source code developed with Objectworks\C++. Objectbuilder\C++ generates the user interface code and Objectworks\C++ enables developers to expand the code, creating the core of the application. The Objectkit\C++ OI library is already integrated into Objectbuilder\C++. However, customers who do not wish to use an interface builder may choose to purchase Objectkit\C++ OI separately. Objectbuilder\C++ generates code for GUI development automatically, while at the same time, it does not restrict experienced users from accessing the classes for complete and precise control of their user interface. This ability to work at any desired level, and yet develop in an object- oriented style, distinguishes Objectbuilder\C++ from other products. Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI are based on technology licensed from Solbourne Computer, Inc. Under an agreement announced last month between Solbourne's Software Business Unit and ParcPlace, ParcPlace is remarketing Solbourne's products to C and C++ UNIX programmers. "With a reputation for understanding the issues associated with object-oriented development, ParcPlace is an excellent source for customers who want to purchase a complete C++ solution," said George Kakatsakis, general manager of Solbourne's Software Business Unit. "Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI ease the development of Motif and OPEN LOOK GUIs and help facilitate the growth of object-oriented applications, enabling all levels of C++ programmers to become productive quickly." Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI Features Built with Objectkit\C++ OI's features, Objectbuilder\C++ allows developers to speed user interface design. These features include: class hierarchy, inheritance, subclassing, accelerators, localization, and access to X Resources, all supporting rapid development of C++ based, OSF/Motif and OPEN LOOK applications. Objectbuilder\C++'s WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) environment enables developers to use drag-and-drop techniques to select from several palettes of objects, such as scrollbars, check boxes and button menus, that provide access to standard user interface objects from both Motif and OPEN LOOK. These objects can be placed quickly in desired locations on the screen. By repeating this process, developers rapidly can prototype, design, implement and test GUIs. In this way, development cycles are shortened dramatically, and the ergonomics of the interface design can be evaluated before programming investments are made. Objectworks\C++ Features Objectworks\C++, Release 3 is well suited for technical, engineering and scientific professionals developing C++ software in a UNIX environment. It is ideal for programming teams working on medium to large C++ projects. Objectworks\C++ integrates a set of tools designed specifically for C++ program development. These tools help programmers create, understand, find and reuse existing C++ code, including code previously developed elsewhere. Price and Availability Objectbuilder\C++ is priced at $1,895 through June 30. After June 30, it will be priced at $2,995. Objectkit\C++ OI is priced at $995. Support contracts for Objectbuilder\C++ are priced at $450 per license, and $225 per license for Objectkit\C++ OI. Volume discounts are available. Objectbuilder\C++ and Objectkit\C++ OI are currently shipping on the Sun SPARC workstation. Both products may be purchased separately from Objectworks\C++. Objectworks\C++, Release 3, will ship for the Sun SPARC workstation and RISC System/6000 platforms during the third quarter of 1992. Objectworks\C++ is priced at $1,995.
