---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNPRO ENHANCES SPARCWORKS PROFESSIONAL FOR SUPERSPARC AND SOLARIS 1.0 SunFLASH Vol 42 #17 June 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCompilers yield 8-12% improvement on SuperSPARC; SPARCworks 2.0 to support both versions of Solaris operating environments MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- June 15, 1992 -- SunPro(TM), a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, today announced enhancements to its SPARCworks(TM) Professional family of development environments that improve performance of applications running on SuperSPARC(TM)-based workstations by 8% to 12% over the previous release. Tools and language features initially released only for Solaris 2.0 will be available on Solaris 1.0 to further support application migration. In addition, SPARCworks Professional packages utilize a new flexible network licensing scheme that enables tools and compilers to support different versions of the Solaris environment interchangeably. SuperSPARC Optimizations SunPro's enhanced compilers for ANSI C, C++, FORTRAN, and Pascal extract added performance from SuperSPARC, the industry's most highly integrated reduced instruction set computing (RISC) microprocessor. SuperSPARC's superscalar "engine" executes up to three instructions in each clock cycle. SPARCompiler(TM) products now employ new advanced optimization techniques and parallel instruction scheduling to enable developers to get the most out of SuperSPARC without sacrificing performance or binary compatibility with other SPARC implementations. Performance improvements were measured on a SPARCstation(TM) 10 (40 Mhz) running over 300 application benchmarks representing a broad range of typical workstation operations. "These latest SPARCompilers will get the most out of SuperSPARC systems," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of SunPro. "At SunPro, we focus on application performance not just SPECmarks. Real applications can expect to see these improvements." SPARCworks and SPARCompilers for both Solaris 1.0 and 2.0 The availability of SPARCworks 2.0 on both Solaris 1.0 and 2.0 allows users to focus on application development and porting without the inconvenience of changing toolsets. SPARCworks 2.0 includes graphical browsers to help developers understand program structure quickly and clearly, debugger facilities to enable debugging full production code, tool integration for sharing information between tools, and the online AnswerBook(TM) document retrieval system for instant access to all product documentation. SPARCompiler C, C++, FORTRAN, and Pascal will also support both versions of Solaris. Plus, SPARCompiler C++ supports the most current language definition, cfront 3.0. With these features now available on Solaris 1.0, developers can use the same toolset throughout their migration to quickly deliver high performance applications. Additionally, SPARCworks Professional's new network licensing supports an OS-independent license token that offers the flexibility to run on either operating environment interchangeably. Pricing and Availability The enhanced versions of the SPARCworks Professional packages will be available September 30, 1992, through SunPro authorized resellers worldwide, including Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation(TM) and SunExpress(TM).
