---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNPRO ANNOUNCES C TRANSITION PACK FOR $995 SunFLASH Vol 42 #16 June 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transition Packs for C++, Pascal, and FORTRAN also available; Preserves investment in development tools through Solaris 1.0 to 2.0 transition MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- June 15, 1992 -- SunPro(TM), a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, today announced availability of the C Transition Pack -- a combination of compilers and development tools -- to ease migrating C applications from version 1.0 to 2.0 of the Solaris" operating environment. Through September 30, 1992, the C Transition Pack will be specially priced at $995, a savings of over 70% off regular SunPro list prices.Transition Packs were also announced for C++, Pascal, and FORTRAN at prices which represent a savings of over 35%. Each Transition Pack combines a compiler and development tools for use on Solaris 1.0 with the latest version of the SPARCworks(TM) Professional development environment for use on Solaris 2.0. In addition, customers who purchase and register the transition packs are eligible to reveive a free CD-ROM upgrade to the next release of SPARCworks Professional when available. Preserves Investment in Tools and Compilers SunPro has created Transition Packs as part of an overall strategy to support programmers in their efforts to complete the transition to the Solaris 2.0 operating environment. Because Transition Packs support Solaris 1.0 and 2.0 interchangeably, developers can preserve their investment in development tools throughout the migration. "We provide the best tools to help in the move to ANSI C and Solaris 2.0," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of SunPro. "Because of the recent unbundling of C compilers from Solaris, we want to provide an excellent value to help our loyal users through the transition. Developers won't find a better deal anywhere." Special C Compiler Features Ease Migration of C Applications The C Transition Pack includes optimizing ANSI C compilers which provide special support for developers migrating their applications to the Solaris 2.0 operating environment. By supporting both the Kernighan and Ritchie (K&R) C and ANSI C language dialects, developers can migrate their C applications in a step-by-step fashion. A unique mixed-dialect mode allows C applications to be prepared for migration on Solaris 1.0 and then recompiled and tuned on Solaris 2.0. Similarly, applications written in C++, Pascal, or FORTRAN can be easily recompiled for Solaris 2.0. Includes Comprehensive Set of Development Tools Each Transition Pack includes a comprehensive set of visual development tools to speed the migration of applications to Solaris 2.0. SPARCworks includes innovative data collection and performance analysis tools that simplify performance tuning. It also offers graphical browsers to help developers understand program structure quickly and clearly, debugger facilities to enable debugging full production code, tool integration for sharing information between tools, and online AnswerBook(TM) document retrieval system for instant access to all product documentation. Pricing and Availability SunPro Transition Packs will be available in volume as of July 1, 1992, through Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation(TM) (SMCC), SunExpress(TM), and authorized SunPro resellers worldwide. SPARCompiler C 2.0, a compiler only product for Solaris 2.0, is also being offered at a special price for customers who do not require development tools. The offer expires September 30, 1992.
