---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC And GE Information Services to Offer Networked Information And Document Management Solutions SunFLASH Vol 42 #4 June 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Companies Announce Joint Marketing and Sales Agreement MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- June 3, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and General Electric Information Services (GEIS) announced a joint marketing and sales agreement to promote networked, UNIX-based information and document management systems. The new solutions will combine SMCC's industry-leading SPARCstation and SPARCserver systems and the Solaris operating environment with GEIS' expertise in systems integration and developing customized applications. Key to the new solutions are advanced database retrieval, messaging and electronic data interchange (EDI) technologies that allow users throughout an enterprise to share not only text but complex compound documents containing graphics and images. Included in these technologies is NeWSware, a unique on-line database search and electronic mail service based on the OpenWindows windowing environment and jointly developed by GEIS and Sun. NeWSware is the only such tool for UNIX that is available on a wide-area network. According to analysts, GEIS is the number one EDI network provider worldwide, and will be the first vendor to offer a networked EDI solution for UNIX. SMCC selected the company as a partner in this effort because of its experience in systems integration, global networking and application customization. SMCC is the top vendor of workstations and servers, with an installed base of more than 600,000 systems. The SMCC/GEIS partnership will address the growing demand for networked, UNIX-based document management solutions, particularly in markets such as manufacturing and publishing. For example, by allowing workgroups to share not only text but product designs and complex technical specifications, the SMCC/GEIS solution will facilitate concurrent engineering and just-in-time manufacturing, reducing the time it takes to get new products to market. Large publishers will benefit from the ability to rapidly customize and deliver large volumes of information to end users as well as the ability to handle multiple document formats and large files. "Never before has the ability to quickly access information on a worldwide basis been more critical," Mario Dal Canto, SMCC director of technical and industrial market development. "Today's businesses truly need to have `facts at their fingertips.' These solutions will give users an entirely new way to access and share information, demonstrating the power of open, client-server computing in the rapidly expanding information services market." "We believe that our expertise in global networked solutions coupled with SMCC's strength in the workstation arena will change the way that organizations handle documents," said James Macioce, manager-technical services, GE Information Services. "SMCC was a natural fit for this program." GE Information Services provides information solutions over the world's largest private wide area network, specializing in highly customized application integration backed up by comprehensive worldwide support. A division of the General Electric Company, GE Information Services is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. GE Information Services Bob Plumb (301) 340-4972 Sun Microsystems Computer Corp.
