---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC Signs Reseller Pact With Auto-Grafica SunFLASH Vol 43 #12 July 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., (July 20, 1992) -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced it has signed a reseller agreement with Auto-Grafica, one of the largest integrators and distributors of pre-press systems in the newspaper and graphic arts industries. Under the agreement, Auto-Grafica will sell Sun hardware, bundled with software and peripheral equipment, in a number of international markets. The contract is valued at $1 million annually. SMCC is the first UNIX-based hardware vendor chosen and supported by Auto-Grafica. "Approximately 60 percent of newspapers are now using UNIX publishing systems. By choosing the Sun platform, Auto-Grafica is poised to respond to increasing market demand for UNIX and open systems solutions," said Katherine Parker, SMCC's pre-press market segment manager. This contract will leverage Auto-Grafica's multi-national sales capabilities and SMCC's leadership in the UNIX workstation market to expand the use of both companies' products and services. Auto-Grafica's primary sales markets include South and Central America, Spain, Portugal and the Caribbean. Applications that Auto-Grafica will offer on Sun include full electronic pagination, news wire reception, picture reception, scanner and color retouching, and color/monochrome picture storage and retrieval. Newspaper, magazine and graphic arts publishers have been targeted as the primary customers to benefit from this partnership. "Our goal is to offer the most powerful and cost-effective hardware and software solutions to our current and potential customers," said George Hall, president of Auto-Grafica. "We are working with Sun to provide our customers with connectivity, productivity and increased throughput -- all on one platform." SMCC first entered the commercial publishing arena in 1988 with an "open systems" approach to hardware. The company's leveraged business model allows it to focus on hardware technology innovations -- like built-in ISDN and video/audio capabilities -- rather than trying to perfect all technologies that could be added to the platform. SMCC now works with more than 30 pre-press software vendors and systems integrators who can maximize the potential of the Sun SPARC-based technology. Auto-Grafica is a 22-year-old pre-press systems integrator and software developer that sells and services graphic arts and newspaper publishing solutions throughout most Spanish-speaking countries. The company has further increased its international reach through business affiliations in 20 countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and in some African and Middle Eastern countries. Auto-Grafica is a privately owned company headquartered in Hackensack, New Jersey.
