SMCC offers HP/Apollo customers trade-ups to SPARCstations at very attractive prices. We're offering better products, better prices, better availability, and a better future than HP is offering to its own installed base. The last order date for the program is 31 October. SMCC will be offering help with: o Domain/Solaris interoperability o Software migration to Solaris o Migration support services COMPELLING REASONS TO MOVE TO SUN --------------------------------- The HP/Apollo customer base should react very favorably to SMCC's position in the market. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS - PHASE 1 ---------------------------- Apollo or HP/Apollo customers can get either a SPARCstation 2 or SPARCstation IPX system complete with: o 19" Trinitron color monitor o 424-Mbyte disk with pre-installed Solaris o 32-Mbytes RAM (16-Mbytes with SPARCstation IPX) o GX accelerated graphics o 1.44-Mbyte floppy drive o Country kit with microphone Customers need only return one of the following Apollo or HP/Apollo systems in working order (including monitor): o DN2500 o DN3000 o DN3500 o DN3550 o DN4000 o DN4500 o DN5500 o DN10000 o HP/Apollo 9000 series 400 Once the HP/Apollo customer owns a SPARCstation 2 or IPX, they can upgrade to SPARCstation 10 at very aggressive pricing. In fact, this "two-step" upgrade represents a considerable savings relative to buying a SPARCstation 10 directly. HP/Apollo 9000-400 customers get an even more aggressive price when trading up to SPARC. SMCC is committed to ensuring superior transition support from Domain to Solaris/SPARC. We are in the process of establishing tools and programs that will cover three key areas: o software migration o interoperability o service/support QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Why is SMCC offering this trade-up program? A. There is a large installed base of HP/Apollo Domain/CISC customers who are running out of horsepower and are looking to move to UNIX/RISC. SMCC has a superior UNIX/RISC product line to any other competitor by far and away. We want to encourage those Domain/CISC customers to try SMCC rather that opt for the relatively weak offerings from HP. With over 140,000 potential trade-up customers out there, the opportunity is phenomenal. Q. SMCC's trade-up offering provides "less than no penalty upgrades" to SPARCstation 10. What does this mean? A. An HP/Apollo customer can trade-up to either SPARCstation 2 or SPARCstation IPX, and when they are ready, upgrade to a SPARCstation 10 for a combined price that is significantly less than the price of a new SPARCstation 10. In fact, the SPARCstation 10 that results from a SPARCstation 2 to SPARCstation 10 model 41 "two-step" upgrade will be about 25% less than the SPARCstation 10 model 41. Q. What about the aggressive campaign HP announced to upgrade their installed base to the 9000-700 series? A HP did announce a program to move their Domain base to the 9000-700 series. However, at this time, all that is available is trade-in credit towards new systems, and they are quite expensive. Within a few months, HP will be shipping board upgrades from the 9000-425e ONLY to the HP 710. The HP 710 is the low-end of HP's line and is not upgradable or expandable. Board upgrades for the rest of the 9000-400 series will not be available until 1993, and again, they'll be upgrades to the 710. Q. What does the customer return to SMCC, and do they have to return something before they can upgrade? A. The customer must return a full system in working order to SMCC within 30 days of receipt of the trade-up product. Unlike HP's program, SMCC's customers do not have to return anything before trading-up. The trade-up includes a return materials authorization kit (RMA) that provides the customer with everything they need (except packaging) to comply with the return rules. Q. Is there an additional charge for the Operating System? A. All of SMCC's trade-ups come with Solaris 1.1 SMCC version A pre-installed on the disk drive at no additional charge. Q. When will the trade-up products be available? A. Products can be ordered immediately and will begin shipping in 1-2 weeks. Q. How long will this program be in place? A. The last order date is 31 October 31 1992. Customers must take delivery of the trade-up products by no later than 31 December 31 1992. NOTE: THIS PROMOTION IS NOT AVAILABLE UNDER NEGOTIATED CONTRACTS. ONLY STANDARD CONTRACT DISCOUNTS MAY BE APPLIED. NOTE: MAXIMUM DISCOUNTS MAY APPLY TO THESE TRADE-UP PRODUCTS.
