---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Unveils Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit SunFLASH Vol 37 #19 January 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- January 22, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today introduced the Solaris(R) 2.0 Migration Kit, a free set of tools and documentation developed to assist SMCC customers with their transition from the Solaris 1.0 to the Solaris 2.0 distributed computing solution. Solaris 2.0 is based on the industry-standard UNIX(R) System V Release 4 operating system, and includes the ONC(TM) networking products and services, the OpenWindows(TM) environment and DeskSet(TM) productivity tools, which use the OPEN LOOK(R) graphical interface. By early next year, all new SMCC SPARC(R) systems will exclusively run Solaris 2.0. The Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit contains the System V Migration Tool (the Pipeline Tool), the SunOS 4.1.x-to-Solaris 2.0 Migration and Compatibility Guide, a site-migration planning worksheet and extensive documentation --all on a single compact disc (CD). In addition, there are technical white papers and detailed "question and answer" documents for system administrators and developers. SMCC today also released an interactive, multimedia tutorial about Solaris 2.0 and the migration effort, which is featured on the Migration Kit CD. The Migration Kit utilizes Sun's AnswerBook(TM) technology, which allows all of the online documentation to be easily accessed with sophisticated search and retrieval functions. To locate information, users can type in simple phrases, "click" on table of contents entries or use hypertext links to reference related topics. The Pipeline Tool A key element of the kit is the Pipeline Tool for developers. One of the first of its kind, this easy-to-use, mouse-based product scans Solaris 1.0 application code for Solaris 2.0 standards compliance and recommends solutions to any incompatibility it encounters. Application code can be verified against industry standards, including SVID-3 (System V Interface Definition Issue 3) and SCD 2.0 (SPARC Compliance Definition). The Pipeline Tool dramatically speeds the transition effort required to convert customers' current applications to Solaris 2.0. Other Migration Support In addition to distributing the Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit, SMCC is holding worldwide educational training seminars for developers and system administrators. The SMCC support organization will also continue to assist customers in their migration efforts. Concurrently, SunSoft, the system software subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., is providing the Solaris 2.0 Early Access Program to computer manufacturers and third-party application vendors. Availability The SMCC Solaris 2.0 Migration Kit is available today in limited quantities, free of charge. The kit will be shipping in volume within 60 days. All SMCC customers with a software support contract will receive copies of the kit. PR contact: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp.
