---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Technical Books Review Newsletter SunFLASH Vol 38 #17 February 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is an announcement from USENET. -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: james@techbook.com (James Deibele) Newsgroups: comp.newprod Subject: New Newsletter on technical books Organization: TECHbooks of Beaverton Oregon - Public Access Unix Q: What is the TECHbooks Journal? A: It's published 10 times a year. The goal during a year is to cover every new technical book that's published and many valuable older books. We also publish category collections listing every book available on a certain subject, like Emacs, neural nets, and fractals. See below for what we consider "technical". Q: How much does it cost? A: It's normally $15/year, but we have it on special for only $10/year. How much do you make an hour? If you find out about one book that saves you one hour of time, have you made your $10 back? If that's not good enough, see below for an unbeatable deal. Q: Bookstore A sends me a newsletter twice a year. Why do I need yours? A: Bookstore A probably does a good job of picking the fifty hottest titles. For some people, that might be enough. But from what we've seen of bookstore newsletters, they're not very detailed in their descriptions, they don't have very much depth, and they don't come out very regularly. There's a book on the shelf that will save you hours of time. But how do you know it's there? We'll tell you. Q: So what's that "unbeatable" deal? A: On receipt of your subscription, we'll mail you three coupons. Each coupon is good for $5 off the price of any single book you order, plus you get free shipping for that order and you don't pay sales tax. How good is your math? (3 * 5) - 10 = 5. You make $5 on your subscription. The coupons are good for two years from the time of your subscription, and are valid on specials, closeouts, or any other special prices. You just can't use more than one on a single book. You can order three books in one order, or you can order them one at a time. We guarantee that you'll be happy with the TECHbooks Journal. If, at any time, you're not completely satisfied with your subscription, just let us know and we'll return the balance of your account. Q: How do I subscribe? A: Send your check or credit card (Visa, AmEx, Mastercard) number to us. TECHbooks Journal Credit card numbers can be e-mailed or faxed. 12600 SW 1st Street email: tbj@techbook.com Beaverton, OR 97005 fax: +1 503 248-6320 Voice: +1 503 646-8257 We need your name and mailing address. A daytime phone would be useful for us in case we have problems as well as an e-mail address. Credit card subscribers remember to put the expiration date down as well as the name on the card if it's different than your own. We will mail you out a receipt and your coupons when we receive your subscription order. Please contact us for specific rates for overseas or first class postage. Q: Why aren't you doing an electronic version of this? A: The files can be massive, and the job of administering a large mailing list are pretty frightening. The combination of the two, and what it might do to our system, has convinced us not to do an electronic version at this time. We might change our minds later. It's much easier to print labels, even with our cranky daisywheel. We use recycled paper and soybean ink because it's easier on the environment. We working on the TECHNOID, our books database. Now in alpha-test, this program will let you specify keywords and/or subjects that you're interested in. TECHNOID will then send you information on those items as new books are entered. Q: So what are technical books? A: Computer science; applications (DOS, Excel, WordPerfect); user interface design; intellectual property and copyright laws; business books, particularly about entreprenuers or high-tech management; quality control; physics; electrical and electronics engineering; mathematics, especially applied mathematics; writing in general and technical writing in particular; and even some fiction that's related to the computer industry in some way. tbj-info [01/22/92] ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
