---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation And P.INK Sign Reseller Agreement SunFLASH Vol 38 #13 February 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agreement Targets Commercial Electronic Publishing Market BOSTON, Mass. --Feb. 18, 1992-- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and P.INK America, a Time Warner Inc., company, announced today at the Seybold Publishing Conference that they have signed an agreement under which P.INK America(TM) will bundle Sun's SPARC(R) computers in its electronic publishing solution, called P.INK Press(TM). P.INK, a leading reseller of high-end publishing solutions, has already signed $1.5 million worth of contracts for the P.INK Press system in Europe. P.INK Press will be sold in North America by P.INK America, with European sales coordinated through partner company P.INK Software Engineering and Co., GmbH of Hamburg, Germany. According to industry analysts, the publishing systems used by most magazine and newspaper organizations are ripe for computer system overhauls. In the United States and Canada alone, most publications use publishing systems based on minicomputer technology that is more than 10 years old and that cannot take advantage of the power and flexibility of today's microcomputer-based hardware. The new system will be one of the few of its type to manage editorial and advertising functions in the publishing industry using a client-server model of computing that is based on a structured query language (SQL) relational database management system (RDBMS). It gives users the ability to quickly and easily retrieve and edit page elements such as text, color, style sheets and pictures. Running the Sybase(R) SQL Server RDBMS on SPARC systems, including the SPARC server family, P.INK Press systems will offer users very high performance at a low cost. "The P.INK Press system has been dubbed `the one to watch' by the Seybold Report on Publishing Systems, and P.INK's relationship with Time Warner gives them a strong presence in the U.S. market," said Katherine Parker, publishing market segment manager for SMCC. "We expect our alliance with P.INK to significantly expand our market presence in the worldwide commercial publishing industry." Sun Price/Performance on Sybase A Key Factor According to Gerard Lelievre, president of P.INK America, P.INK selected Sun's SPARC/Solaris(R) servers for P.INK Press based on the superior price/performance displayed by Sun systems that are running the Sybase RDBMS. Recent benchmark testing shows that the Sun/Sybase combination delivers the best price/performance for data throughput and transactions in the industry. "We have evaluated a number of UNIX(R) systems for performing server functions for P.INK Press," said Lelievre. "Sun and Sybase systems operating together not only provide the best performance by a significant ratio, but are also a very stable, reliable combination. In addition, we like the flexibility of the Sun SPARC product line and the robust capabilities of SunSoft's Solaris distributed computing solution. Since publishing installations may range from 5 to 1,500 nodes on a server, it is easy for us to select the appropriate Sun server." P.INK Press, widely used in Europe, is a microcomputer-based, fully-integrated publishing system for magazines and newspapers that links together advertising, invoicing, administration, text input and page production. During 1991 the firm signed an agreement with Time Warner Inc., establishing P.INK America. P.INK software engineering GmbH & Co. was founded in 1987 and is located in Hamburg, Germany.
