Based upon the integration of a set of general purpose database objects with a Graphical User Interface (GUI), SmartStar Vision minimizes the coding effort required to create client-server applications. The initial product release is aimed at organizations that currently have application needs with X-window systems, using the industry standard Motif graphical user interface. Application servers supported are Sun Sparc, DEC Ultrix and DEC VMS operating systems. Client systems supported include MS/Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems running X-server network software, X-terminals and any X-systems. "We have created the industry's first general purpose set of database objects that are integrated with graphical user interface objects" explained Dr. John Markel, president of SmartStar. "This approach allows application developers who work on general purpose day-to-day business applications, the power and flexibility of object-oriented technology, but without the complexity. For the manager, this technology results in more applications, with less code, in less time and with much less long term maintenance effort." SmartStar Vision allows for rapid application development of all standard GUI window styles such as scrolling columnar displays, and invoice order form displays. Completely general multi-table SQL insert, update, delete and select operations including arbitrary qualification is allowed, without coding. The only coding required to convert a prototype to a production application is to implement the basic business rules or requirements that define the purpose of the application. All multi-window menu interfacing, including multi-level menu support is supported without coding. This general purpose set of database objects is created and managed within the same object-oriented architecture as the GUI objects. The database objects include a complete set of methods that encapsulate all of the standard run-time SQL behavior as a function of the particular style of window used in the application. Most importantly, these methods are extendible by the developer with a standards-based 4GL called SmartGL. This language can then be used to implement the business rules that define the ultimate value of the application. Rather than the developer having to maintain and edit complex SQL syntax intermingled with status testing and conditional operations, the business rules that require code are defined as 4GL attributes to the appropriate database objects. The behavior of the database methods is then modified internally by these object attributes. Markel provided an example. "If the business requirement is to produce invoice displays with order items displayed in a last-in first-out basis, along with flexible run-time query, the total coding in the application is the business rule 'InvoiceDate Desc' entered into the 'OrderBy' attribute for the 'DetailView' object of the database hierarchy. Creating this same capability (even without the flexible query ability) is a two to three week task with a GUI builder, and generally takes at least several hours or several days with most 4GL products. SmartStar Vision can create this type of application in literally five minutes. Because of its object-oriented design, SmartStar Vision provides the minimum code solution to client-server application development." The server portion of SmartStar Vision contains a sophisticated heterogeneous multiple SQL database query optimizer and distributor, based on the technology developed by SmartStar Corporation over the last ten years for its VAX 4GL product, SmartStar VMS. Relational databases supported by SmartStar Vision include an internal SQL database processor using the operating system files (RMS for VMS, or CISAM for UNIX), or industry standard SQL databases including Oracle, Ingres, Sybase and Rdb. SmartStar Corporation is currently developing additional desktop application servers for future release, and will support other computer systems. The first release of SmartStar Vision, including all database options is available now. Single seat pricing for a developer system is $12,000 with deployment pricing from $75 to $600 per license depending on quantity. SmartStar Corporation was founded in 1977. It has been a market leader in the DEC VAX-4GL area and was the first provider of a VAX-4GL in 1984. It offers extensive customer support and professional services, including training courses, toll-free telephone support and maintenance and upgrade services. Conforming to open systems industry standards, Mail-it enables Microsoft Windows users to send and reply to messages anywhere on a PC and UNIX network. Prior to Mail-it, a network manager wanting to integrate a PC network e-mail system into a UNIX one had to rely on expensive and inefficient gatewaying technology. This would link the LAN e-mail system's proprietary messaging protocols to the UNIX open standard. Mail-it is a MS Windows application that allows PC users to link directly with existing UNIX e-mail systems using the 'open' standard mail transfer protocols: SMTP and POP-2. Mail-it enables users to read, send, forward, reply, print and save e-mail. It also includes an alert function to automatically inform the user of incoming mail, which is stored in an 'in-tray' folder ready to read. Corporate auditing requirements are fulfilled by an optional log which records all mailsent and a comprehensive filing system to archive and find previous messages. For high volume users a task management facility performs repetitive jobsquickly and a forms facility delivers a custom format for ordering, invoicing and so on. Due to Mail-it's modular architecture, there exists an upgrade path to emerging Open Standards such as Multi-media mail (MIME), and Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM). This architecture also offers the ability to readily support additional third party networking software. Features ======== MS Windows 3.x compatible Supports full text cut and paste On-line help fully explains use without the need to reference documentation Mouse and keyboard driven Shortcut keys giving fast access to all main functions Mail Facilities =============== Read, Send, Forward, Reply, Print, Save Alert function automatically informs you of incoming mail Flexible filing system allows you to easily keep track of all your correspondence, and optionally logs all mail sent. ANS CO+RE Systems, Inc., has announced that it is expanding and enhancing its InterLock family of IP network security services. InterLock (a servicemark of ANS CO+RE) is an array of application-level security services that controls all network access between the Internet and a private IP network and/or between segments of an organization's private IP network. When InterLock was introduced in October 1991, it was comprised of security-enhanced versions of TELNET, file transfer protocol (FTP) and simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) services. With the most recent announcement, InterLock services now include security-enhanced versions of X window system and network news transfer (NNTP) protocols, plus the support for end-to-end encryption on all services. The encryption is based upon DES, and it is available between two or more InterLocks. Access to each of the InterLock services is controlled via a rules base, which is configured by the InterLock administrator at the enterprise network's location. Use of a particular service, including encryption, can be granted or denied based on any combination of userid, time of day, day of the week, private/public network address and private/public host address criteria designated by the administrator. Once a user is authenticated, communication to and >From both sides of the InterLock occurs transparently. Each service provides login tracking, audit and reporting features. InterLock services are not only effective, they also are easy to integrate into a private IP network, because ANS CO+RE designed them as a true turnkey package. Installation of hardware and software is provided to the customer, as is the initial configuration of services and 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a week maintenance and support. ANS CO+RE also offers training for InterLock administrators. InterLock services are leased on a yearly basis; prices range from $18,500-$29,000, based on the configuration of services selected. The enhanced version of the InterLock family will be demonstrated at this week's InterOp conference and will be available November 30. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: New Liken Features; Package Supports E-mail From: Douglas Cooper Contact: Tom Carroll, Doug Cooper Org: Cooper/Iverson Marketing Phone: (619) 292-7400 Contact: Ray Wagstaffe, President Contact: Dave McMillen, Chief Technical Officer Org: Xcelerated Systems, Inc. According to Dave McMillen, chief technical officer for Xcelerated Systems, Inc. (XSI), this is an announcement that has significant impact on thousands of corporate users and administrators around the world. He says, "Yesterday, there were three major e-mail packages that didn't work on Unix systems. With the introduction of our latest version of Liken, today they do." Since it was delivered in January of this year, Liken has allowed users of Unix workstations with the X Window environment to run such Mac applications as Claris FileMaker Pro, MacDraw and MacProject, Microsoft Word and Powerpoint and QuarkXpress and Canvas without modification. According to McMillen, before this version of Liken, Unix users had to depend entirely on SMTP mail tools. He sees Liken as an enabling technology that brings these disenfranchised Unix users "into the fold" of corporate-wide mainstream computing. He says, "For the first time, there isn't a communication gap between Macintoshes, SPARCstations and PA-RISC workstations. They all work together by communicating effectively."
