The "enclosure exchange" upgrades give customers all the performance and expandability of the SPARCcenter 2000, including up to 20 CPUs, 40 SBus slots, 10MB/sec SCSI interface, and the XDBus(TM) system bus for high system bus bandwidth. The following upgrade paths are available to customers who own a rack server and want to take advantage of the expanded power of the SPARCcenter 2000 Series: o From SPARCserver 690MP o From SPARCserver 490 o From SPARCserver 390 Sun is providing maximum investment protection for customers upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series. Customers with SPARCserver 690MP Model 41 systems can migrate their SM41 modules to the SPARCcenter 2000. Customers with SM100 modules (SPARCserver 600MP Models 120 and 140) can upgrade them at "no penalty" prices to SM41 modules and use the SM41 modules in their SPARCcenter 2000. In addition, customers upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 series can upgrade their IPI disks to Sun's newest 2.1-Gbyte Differential SCSI disks. A customer's investment in Sun technology is also protected with the modular design of the SuperSPARC(TM) processors which ensures a cost effective upgrade path to next generation technology. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - 2.1-Gbyte Differential SCSI disks migrate to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series - IPI drives are not supported on the SPARCcenter 2000 Series - SPARCserver 690MP, SPARCserver 490, and SPARCserver 390 memory is not supported on the SPARCcenter 2000 Series - Some SBus cards that customers use on their SPARCserver 690MP are not supported on the SPARCcenter 2000 Series SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - Upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series require a later release of (R) Solaris 2.x operating environment. Upgrade customers can order the Solaris media at no charge. See the "Solaris Upgrade" section of the price book for more information. - Upon installation of the enclosure exchange upgrade, the Ethernet address and hostid will change. AVAILABILITY ------------- Upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series will be available at the same time as systems, with shipments beginning in April 1993. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. A customer owns a SPARCserver 690MP Model 41. The module from this system can be migrated to the upgrade to SPARCcenter 2000. How is this implemented? A. The upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series from the SPARCserver 690MP include a second 0 CPU, 0-Mbyte system board. The customer places the SM41 module(s) on this second system board. The resulting system is a 3 CPU SPARCcenter 2000 Series system. Q. A customers owns a SPARCserver 690MP Model 140 system. Can they migrate the two SM100 modules to their SPARCcenter 2000 Series upgrade? A. The customer who owns a SPARCserver 690MP Model 140 (or Model 120) needs to upgrade the SM100 modules to SM41 SuperSPARC modules with SuperCache. The customer should order a UG-M120-M41 module upgrade for each SM100 module. The price for the module upgrade is "no penalty." When the customer receives the SM41 modules, he/she can place them on the second system board which is shipped with the SPARCcenter 2000 Series enclosure exchange upgrade. These customers will end up with a 3 CPU or 4 CPU SPARCcenter 2000 Series system. Q. What is a "no penalty" price for the module upgrades? A. No penalty means that a customer can buy a SPARCstation 690MP Model 120 now and upgrade later to Model 41 for the same total price that they would have paid for the Model 41 server. It works like this: SPARCserver 690MP Model 120 (S690-120-128-P61) $ X Module Upgrade to Model 41 (UG-M120-M41) $ Y ------- TOTAL $ Z Note: $ Z is the SAME price as SPARCserver 690MP Model 41 (S690-41-128-P61) Q. How will I know what module is currently in my server system? A. There is a simple diagnostic test. At a prompt, type: cd /etc (return) dmesg|more (return) In the messages that appear, there will be references to the current SM100 modules in the Models 120 and 140 (look for "Cypress") and the SuperSPARC(TM) modules in Models 41, 52, and 54 (look for "TI"). The message will also indicate how many modules are in the system. Q. When A customers buy an upgrade to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series, which version of Solaris is required? A. The required operating system software for the SPARCcenter 2000 Series is a later release of Solaris 2.x. Upgrade customers can order Solaris 2.x media (SOL-CF) at no charge. Customers upgrading to Solaris 2.x are also required to order one or two Solaris 2.x server upgrade licenses. Please see next question for details. (See the "Solaris Upgrade" section of the price book for more information too.) Q. When upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series, which Solaris upgrade license(s) must a customer order? A. If the customer is upgrading from a SPARCserver 690MP with only one processor (Model 41), the customer has a uniprocessor server license. That customer must order a Solaris multiprocessor server license (SOLS-M-L) at no additional charge when upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series. In addition, if the customer is not already running the version of Solaris required for SPARCcenter 2000, the customer must also order a Solaris 2.x server upgrade license (SOLS-LF) at no additional charge. (The media is available at no charge by ordering SOL-CF.) If the customer is upgrading from SPARCserver 690MP Model 120 or Model 140, the customer already has a multiprocessor server license. If the customer is not already running the version of Solaris required for SPARCcenter 2000, the customer must also order a Solaris 2.x server upgrade license (SOLS-LF) at no additional charge. If the customer is upgrading from SPARCserver 490 or 390, they must order SOLS-M-F for the multiprocessor server license. If the customer is not already running the version of Solaris required for SPARCcenter 2000, the customer must also order a Solaris 2.x server upgrade license (SOLS-LF) at no additional charge. Q. Can a customer migrate IPI disks when upgrading to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series? A. IPI disks are not supported on the SPARCcenter 2000 Series. Customers who are upgrading to SPARCcenter 2000 can order IPI to Differential SCSI disk upgrades. Q. A customer is upgrading from a SPARCserver 690MP to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series. The upgrade includes a 5-GByte tape drive and CD-ROM. What does a customer do with the tape drie and CD-ROM in his SPARCserver 690MP? A. The customer should return the tape drive and CD-ROM in the SPARCserver 690MP enclosure. That means the customer will end up with one tape drive and one CD-ROM in the SPARCcenter 2000 Series system. Q. What does the customer return to Sun and, do they have to return something before they can upgrade? A. For the most part, the customer will be required to return their old system enclosure, system board, and memory. Customers with SPARCserver 690MP, SPARCserver 490, or SPARCserver 390 with IPI disks are required to return two IPI disks in the enclosure. Sun's customers do not have to return anything before upgrading. The required returns are due back to Sun within 30 days of our shipping the upgrade. Q. If I want to upgrade from a SPARCserver 670MP system to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series, which upgrade should I customer order? A. The upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series are "rack-to-rack" upgrades. If customers are interested in upgrading their deskside to the SPARCcenter 2000 rack server, please contact your local sales rep. Q. Is there information available on the On-Line Upgrades Information Tool about the upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series? A. Yes!
