---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Upgrades to SPARCstation 10GS SunFLASH Vol 44 #30 August 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun announces four "box swap" upgrades from SPARCstation 2GS to SPARCstation 10GS. Customers can upgrade to either the SPARCstation 10 Model 30 or the Model 41. The box swap upgrades include Sun's new GS frame buffer: Upgrade to Model 41 GS UG-S2GS-S10-41 Upgrade to Model 41 GS diskfull UG-S2GS-S10-41-P43 Upgrade to Model 30 GS UG-S2GS-S10-30 Upgrade to Model 30 GS diskfull UG-S2GS-S10-30-P43 The introduction of the four upgrade paths to SPARCstation 10GS changes the upgrade plan announced on May 19, 1992. Originally, the GS upgrades to SPARCstation 10 were to be handled individually with the customer returning their entire SPARCstation 2GS system, including monitor. Given the high demand coming from Sun's SPARCstation 2GS installed base, Sun has formalized the upgrade path to SPARCstation 10GS rather than handle upgrades from SPARCstation 2GS on a case-by-case basis. Customers will migrate their monitors, most SBus cards, internal disks(s), external peripherals. PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS ------------------ SPARCstation 2GS to SPARCstation 10GS --------------------------------------- - Chassis swap to models 30 or 41 maintains investment in monitor, SBus cards (some exceptions noted in price list), internal disk(s), external peripherals, keyboard and mouse. - Dramatic performance improvement from SPECint92 21.8/SPECfp92 22.8 to SPECint92 44.2/SPECfp92 52.9 (model 30) and SPECint92 52.6/SPECfp92 64.7 (model 41) - 32-MB ECC memory - Speakerbox and microphone included - Optional 424-MB internal SCSI disk with pre-installed Solaris - Lower cost of ownership than for SPARCstation 2 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Why doesn't the GS board in the SPARCstation 2 migrate to the SPARCstation 10? A. The SPARCstation 10 requires Sun's new GS board because the connectors on the new GS board are different. Q. What does the customer return to Sun, and do they have to return something before they can upgrade? A. Customers will be required to return their SPARCstation 2 system chassis, GS frame buffer, and 16 MB of their SPARCstation 2 memory. However, Sun's customers do not have to return anything before upgrading. The end user who purchases an upgrade from Sun is responsible for returning required components to Sun within 30 days of shipment. Q. What about OS requirements when upgrading to SPARCstation 10? A. SPARCstation 10 upgrades require Solaris 1.1 SMCC version A or above. Upgrade customers can order USX-21 at no charge if media is required.
