Called SearchIt, the new application acts as a personal reference librarian that quickly and easily locates on-line business data such as reports, proposals, and correspondence stored anywhere on the corporate network. In addition, SearchIt enables users to manage and manipulate this information for their specific needs through its easy-to-use intuitive interface. SearchIt utilizes the capabilities of Solaris by seamlessly interoperating with the Solaris DeskSet productivity tools. Users do not need prior knowledge of the contents or location of documents, just the English words or phrase for which they are looking to begin a query. SearchIt returns the results of the query displayed in order of the relevance of each document to the query. For example, a document that contains ten instances of a word or phrase for which a user is searching will be ranked higher in relevance than a document which contains only five instances. SearchIt harnesses the networking capabilities of the Solaris environment, enabling users to search through information on their own desktop or on any system on the corporate network. Using Solaris' networking architecture, ONC`/NFS, SearchIt users can easily access information across multivendor systems. NFS has been licensed by more than 300 organizations, including IBM, Digital Equipment Corporation, Apple Computer, Hewlett-Packard and Novell, Inc. "Imagine, all the electronic information that you have collected over the years can be valuable once again," said Jim Billmaier, vice president of product marketing for SunSoft. "SearchIt's indexing capabilities can take that mountain of information and make it immediately accessible." "SunSoft is the first company to implement content-based retrieval within the workstation, client-server environment," according to Peter Addison, vice president of marketing for Fulcrum Technologies, Inc. "SearchIt sets a new standard for information retrieval for people who must rely on quick and easy access to information contained within the corporation." SearchIt is based on Fulcrum Technologies' Ful/Text search-and- retrieval engine and is the second product from SunSoft to use the Ful/Text technology. AnswerBook`, SunSoft's on-line documentation and help system introduced last year, is also based on the Ful/Text technology. Pricing and Availability SearchIt 1.0 is available immediately for the Solaris 1.0 product. It is sold in a shrink-wrapped package with media and documentation and priced at $295 for a single user license.
