---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN MICROSYSTEMS CONTINUES TO LEAD JAPANESE WORKSTATION MARKET SunFLASH Vol 44 #25 August 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- August 24, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems remains the top workstation vendor in Japan, according to a just-released Dataquest report, having led in that market since 1987. Dataquest Japan's "Analysis for the Information Systems Industry" stated that Sun Microsystems remained the market leader in Japan during 1991, with 29,800 units shipped and $483 million (U.S.) in revenues, up 26 percent and 22 percent, respectively, from 1990. Sun accounted for approximately 25 percent of the Japanese market in terms of both units and value of shipments for 1991. According to the Dataquest report, the major workstation vendors in the Japanese market are Sun, Hewlett-Packard and NEC. Together, this group accounted for 47 percent of units sold and 52 percent of workstation revenues in 1991. While some vendors, like Sun and NEC, saw their unit share increase, others, such as Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi and Sony, had no increase or a reduction. For example, both unit share and revenue share declined at HP, with the former dropping 25 percent in 1991. In March of 1986, Sun established Nihon Sun Microsystems, a wholly owned subsidiary. Since then, the total installed base of Sun systems in Japan has reached 80,000, with a record 10,000 systems shipped in the company's third fiscal quarter, which ended in March, 1992. According to observers, an important factor in Sun's success in the Japanese market is its emphasis on partnerships with leading Japanese computer vendors. The Dataquest numbers demonstrate that between 1986 and 1991, Sun had an 81 percent compounded annual growth rate in the Japanese workstation market. The dramatic, sustained growth in this market was a primary factor in the Pacific Rim's 22 percent contribution to overall Sun revenues last year.
