---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash LEADING PRE-PRESS VENDORS LAUNCH NEW SOFTWARE FOR SUN SPARCSTATIONS SunFLASH Vol 44 #24 August 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- August 25, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that six leading pre-press software and systems vendors will market new applications for the SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) platform. The applications bring advanced desktop, database and processing capabilities to SMCC's line of SPARC workstations, including the newly introduced Sun(TM) SPARCstation(TM) 10. Developers offering new applications on Sun systems include Crosfield Electronics Ltd., Digital Technology International, DuPont/Camex, ECRM, Linotype-Hell Company and System Integrators, Inc. Their products will be used for output and production flow management, display ad make-up, spot and process color imaging, raster image processing and database management. SMCC's pre-press partner roster now has grown to more than 30 companies worldwide. Besides the vendors noted above, other partners include Auto-Grafica Corp., CCI Europe, Datox, Hyphen, Information International, Inc., P.Ink and Scitex. These companies develop and sell pre-press solutions geared for newspaper publishing, a traditionally strong market for SMCC. Newspapers currently employing Sun hardware include The Wall Street Journal, The Evening Standard, the Houston Chronicle, The Orange County Register, and The Dallas Morning News, among others. "These companies are responding to customer demand in the pre-press industry for standard platforms that provide high throughput," said Katherine Parker, pre-press market development manager at SMCC. "Our partners are offering new solutions that increase functionality while unifying existing systems." New Software Applications The new offerings from SMCC's partners are: * Editorial Database, Ad Management Database and Classified Database are new publication management products from Digital Technology International (DT). Running on Sun SPARCstations, these products manage newsroom copy flow, display ad production and classified ad scheduling, rating and production. * Whirlwind is DuPont/Camex's next generation publishing system consisting of editorial, classified ad and pagination applications. This new system runs on a variety of Sun SPARCstations and SPARCservers. Breeze, DuPont/Camex's popular display advertising make-up software, has been ported to Sun SPARC workstations. * ScriptSetters(R), from ECRM, are color-capable imagesetters that run with NeWSprint(TM) XP Software from SunPics, a business unit of Sun Microsystems. These applications are tuned for SPARC workstation users who need high-resolution output capabilities. ScriptSetter III is a 12-inch-wide imagesetter, and ScriptSetter IV is a high-speed, 18-inch-wide broadsheet imagesetter. * LinoPress (TM), from Linotype-Hell Company, is a newspaper publishing solution that incorporates editorial, advertising, pagination, spot and process color and PostScript(R) imaging on a UNIX file server. * PROJECT:SCOOP, from System Integrators, Inc., allows newspapers to manage output processes and devices and increase throughput. PROJECT:SCOOP increases productivity by graphically displaying production flow between departments and devices. * In addition, Crosfield Electronics Ltd., based in the United Kingdom, has demonstrated a modular software solution that allows several applications to be managed by a single SPARCstation. The applications include raster image processing, OPI services, device and image management and tight integration between QuarkDispatch and the UNIX server. "Open Systems" Approach SMCC first entered the commercial publishing arena in 1988 with an "open systems" approach to hardware development. The company's leveraged business model allows it to focus on hardware technology innovations -- like built-in ISDN and video/audio capabilities -- while building strong relationships with software developers, system integrators and value-added resellers.
