---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Chet Silvestri To Drive SPARC Technology Sales SunFLASH Vol 44 #19 August 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will Head New Group to Capture SPARC Design Wins MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- August 13, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that Chester J. Silvestri has joined the company as vice president, technology sales. In his newly created position, Silvestri will manage a new group devoted to securing technology design wins across a variety of industries, markets and geographies for SPARC(R), the leading RISC CPU architecture developed and championed by Sun. Silvestri, who will report to Joseph Roebuck, SMCC's vice president of worldwide field operations, comes to the company from Silicon Graphics, Inc., where he was most recently vice president and general manager of the Technology Products Group. Silvestri became part of Silicon Graphics when it acquired MIPS Computer Systems this year. During his six years with MIPS, Silvestri was first the vice president of marketing and later managed marketing, licensing, partner support and sales of the company's technology products. Prior to joining MIPS, Silvestri was the vice president of marketing for Megatest Corporation, where he managed all the marketing efforts for the company's line of semiconductor test equipment. Silvestri holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Michigan State University and an MBA from Harvard. "We're very serious about our efforts to secure SPARC design wins in areas such as chips, boards and systems," said Roebuck. "With Chet managing this effort, we fully expect to ramp up the operation and close significant deals in short order." According to market research organization International Data Corporation, SPARC systems represent two-thirds of all RISC workstations and servers in use today. Currently, there are more than 4,320 third-party solutions available for Sun SPARC systems. SPARC-based products are available from more than 40 system vendors and 10 microprocessor/chipset vendors. In addition, there are 86 SPARC chip implementations available today.
