---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNSELECT SHIPS NETWARE SUNLINK PRODUCT FOR INTEGRATING NOVELL NETWORKS WITH SPARC AND SOLARIS ENVIRONMENTS SunFLASH Vol 44 #5 August 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prices and availabilty of NetWare SunLink for SMCC customers will be announced shortly. -johnj ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supported By Oracle and Ingres BILLERICA, Mass.--August 3, 1992-- SunSelect(TM), a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced the immediate availability of its NetWare(R) SunLink(R) software for integrating Novell(R) NetWare networks with SPARC(R) and Solaris(R) environments. The NetWare SunLink product allows DOS, Microsoft(R) Windows(R) and OS/2(R) NetWare system users to share data, files and print services with UNIX(R) system workgroups. Based on NetWare for UNIX Version 3.11 from Novell, the NetWare SunLink product provides an easy way to move from a departmental network to a powerful, integrated SPARC/Solaris enterprise network. By simply adding NetWare SunLink on a Sun SPARCserver(TM) system to the network, NetWare customers protect their investment in their existing network while gaining direct access to UNIX system files, applications and services including distributed processing, client-server computing and open systems. With the NetWare SunLink product, the multitasking capabilities, rich development environment and built-in networking services of the 32-bit Solaris system and the high performance of SPARC processing units are now accessible to NetWare system users. "NetWare networks are installed in more than 25 percent of Sun customer sites," said Jan Newman, executive vice president, NetWare Systems Group at Novell, Inc. "With so many of our customers using NetWare and SPARC/Solaris systems as complementary rightsizing solutions, we are excited to see the availability of the NetWare SunLink product." Consistent with Sun's open computing strategy as well as SunSelect's mission to meet the demand for integrating PC resources with open, client-server environments, the NetWare SunLink product bridges the gap between UNIX systems and personal computing resources, giving customers access to a wider range of solutions. In addition to the NetWare SunLink product, SunSelect also markets PC-NFS(R) software, which allows personal computers to run in multivendor networks, and SunPC(TM), an emulation product that lets users run MS-DOS(R) and Microsoft Windows applications on SPARC and Solaris systems. Database Application Support Two of the industry's leading database vendors, Oracle Corporation and Ingres, plan to support the NetWare SunLink product. Oracle, the largest supplier of RDBMS software, will offer ORACLE7 and SQL*Net V2 for NetWare SunLink, its latest RDBMS and networking products. For a six-month period beginning in September 1992, ORACLE7 and SQL*Net V2 for NetWare SunLink will be offered by Oracle in a promotional package called ORACLE7 Server Pak for NetWare SunLink at a 30 percent discount. "With ORACLE7 and NetWare SunLink support, we will now be able to provide customers with the most advanced server for NetWare networks, offering application transparency between PC LANs, workgroup servers, minis and mainframes at an extremely aggressive price/performance level," said Jerry Baker, senior vice president of Oracle's product line divisions. The ORACLE7 Server Pak for NetWare SunLink will be available within 30 days. Ingres has also announced its plans to support NetWare SunLink in Version 6.4 of its RDBMS software package. Ingres(TM) 6.4 with NetWare SunLink support will be available early in the first quarter of calendar year 1993. Pricing and Distribution The NetWare SunLink product will begin shipping August 12, and will be available through SunSelect authorized resellers, including Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) worldwide sales offices, and, in the United States, SunExpress(TM), ComputerLand, and Access Graphics. In Europe, SunSelect's NetWare SunLink software resellers include Merisel DNS and Schneider & Koch in Germany; Bacher in Austria; and selected Novell distributors based in the U.K. and France.
