Island Graphics Corporation is the creator of Island Write, Draw & Paint, the award-winning, best-selling word processing, desktop publishing and graphics program for UNIX. Since IslandPresents' introduction at UniForum in January, Island has added multimedia features, such as full-screen slideshow transitions, and support for playback of voice annotation or musical soundtracks created with the SPARCstation's microphone and audio tool. This first version of IslandPresents supports the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface and OpenWindows 3.0. This Fall, Island will ship a Solaris 2.0 version for SPARC, as well as an OSF/Motif version for SPARCstations and the Hewlett-Packard 9000 workstation series. "IslandPresents is comparable to the leading Mac and PC presentation graphics packages, yet it takes advantage of Solaris' 32-bit power and OPEN LOOK user interface," said Peter Watkins, director of developer marketing for SunSoft. "During several months of beta use at SunSoft and Sun Microsystems, we have found IslandPresents to be extremely powerful, yet easy to use." "Users no longer have to wait for Mac and PC presentation graphics to be ported to Unix now that IslandPresents, an easy-to-use Unix solution, is available," said Paul Remer, executive vice president of Island Graphics. "IslandPresents is the result of listening to the presentation needs of users of Island Write, Draw & Paint for more than three years." Steven Mankoff, Island's Senior Product Manager, concurs. "Until now, many Unix users have created presentations with the wrong tools -- word processors and technical documentation programs. IslandPresents is the right tool for creating presentations on Unix workstations. Its professionally designed templates let users create impressive presentations quickly and easily." IslandPresents Overview IslandPresents is an easy-to-use WYSIWYG presentation and business graphics solution intended for Unix users who need to quickly organize their ideas into overhead presentations, 35mm slides, on-screen presentations, and color handouts. IslandPresents lets users create full color presentations containing up to 16.7 million colors, including 256-color raster graphics. Users can illustrate their presentations with clip art from IslandPresents' library of over 1100 images. IslandPresents comes with 35 PostScript fonts, and lets users add their own Type 1 fonts. Multimedia features include the ability to display full-screen presentations on SPARCstations, and drive large screen displays. On-screen presentations can include transitions such as fades and wipes, and can be annotated with music or voice segments recorded with SunSoft's Audio Tool. IslandPresents includes three tightly linked views of a presentation: an Outliner, a Slide Editor, and a Slide Organizer. Users create presentations in the Outliner, where ideas can be freely rearranged or regrouped at any time. Slides can be edited individually in the Slide Editor, with its drawing tools. The Organizer lets users view the presentation as a series of thumbnail slides, and reorganize them easily. IslandPresents also includes charting, table editing and painting modules. IslandPresents Features In the Outliner, the user can create text items or import ASCII text from other programs. Text items become individual slides, body text, section markers, or annotations that appear only in speaker's notes. Sub-items can be expanded and contracted, promoted and demoted, and dragged and dropped into new locations. The Outliner also offers complete word processing features, such as spell-checking and search and replace. Slide creation and editing features let users select slide layouts from over 90 professionally designed presentation templates, and illustrations from a library of over 1100 editable clip art images. Users can import color and monochrome TIFF, EPS, and IslandDraw graphics directly into their slides. Users can also convert graphics from HPGL, CGM, PostScript, and Macintosh PICT formats, and edit them with the Slide Editor's comprehensive set of drawing tools, which include text, Bezier curve, and gradation editors. The Slide Editor lets users illustrate slides with charts, tables and raster graphics created in (and hot-linked to) the charting, table editing and painting modules of IslandPresents (described below). Business graphics charting features let users create over 16 types of data-driven color business graphics with multiple data sets, including bar, pie and line charts, as well as symbol and X/Y charts. Users can import Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets or ASCII data, and generate single or multiple charts automatically from any portion of the data. Data can also be entered manually. Table editing features allow users to create tables incorporating high-quality text and graphics. The table editor provides an intuitive auto-grow feature that lets cells expand to fit text. Graphics can be imported into cells and cropped or scaled. Painting features let users retouch scanned images and screen dumps, and create original art. IslandPaint offers conversion utilities for graphics in Sun Raster, MacPaint, Group 3 Fax, X11 Bitmap, X Window Dump and GIF formats. Users can create color as well as black and white overhead transparencies, handouts and speaker notes via PostScript, HP LaserJet, PaintJet and DeskJet printers, and they can send their files to outside slidemaking service bureaus. In the near future, IslandPresents will provide 35mm color slide output via SCSI interfaces to Polaroid CI-5000 and Agfa film recorders. Pricing and Availability A single user network license for IslandPresents lists for $995, and is available through Island's regular distribution channels, including Merisel, Access Graphics, and value added resellers. Free complete 30-day evaluation copies are available directly from Island. Current users of Write, Draw & Paint in the U.S. have been mailed a coupon which entitles them to purchase IslandPresents for $695 for a limited time, and customers who purchase Island Write, Draw & Paint together with IslandPresents will also save $300 over the cost of buying the two packages separately. Sys Admin is the journal for UNIX system administrators. Our articles focus on how you can improved the performance or extend the capabilities of your UNIX system. Although most of our readers don't have a job title of "system administrator", all are involved in keeping their company's UNIX system up and running. Sys Admin covers UNIX systems large and small - from standalone 386s to VAXs. Regular features examine shell script, kernels, device drivers, security, and performance tuning. Content is not limited to a specific hardware platform or implementation of UNIX; instead, we discuss problems that bedevil ALL system administrators - from killing zombie processes to freeing up frozen terminals. Sys Admin also includes the readership of root, a UNIX journal formerly published by Karen and Bruce Hunter. The Hunters recently sold root to Sys Admin (7/92). The benefit for our readers? Four excellent root authors: Bruce Hunter, Bjorn Satdeva, Larry Reznick, and Elizabeth Zinkann. These writers are experienced UNIX professionals, and they have a real knack for writing about technical material in an accessible and useful way. Here's a short listing of articles from our May/June 1992 issue: Orchestrating a Kinder, Gentler Disaster (Dorian Deane): preparing your UNIX system for the inevitable system crash. My Favorite One-Liners: Some Useful Shell Programs (David Fielder): how to write script that will double-space a file, identify what files are taking up the most space in a particular directory, and more. Testing Capabilities in Terminals and Emulators (G. Clark Brown): a technique (and two tools) for testing the control characters and escape sequences that are used to manage the terminal display. A Community-Style Overnight Job Spooler (Leor Zolman): how to build an overnight queueing program for your UNIX system. Printer Administration Potpourri for Large-Scale UNIX Systems (Bruce Hunter): an introductory overview of UNIX printer spoolers and an examination of some typical printer problems. Security and Electronic Mail (R. King Ables): how to make sure that email goes to the right place the FIRST time How UNIX Password Controls Work (Chris Hare): an examination of the UNIX password encryption system. Plus additional articles on: USENET Elm, core files, installing AIX, and security. Sys Admin is published 6 times a year by R&D Publications (1601 W. 23rd St., Suite 200, Lawrence, KS 66046, 913-841-1631). A one year subscription is $39.00.
