---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun's Earning and Revenues (Third Fiscal Quarter) Up SunFLASH Vol 40 #31 April 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN MICROSYSTEMS ANNOUNCES RECORD REVENUES AND INCREASED EARNINGS FOR THIRD FISCAL QUARTER MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- April 22, 1992 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., (SUNW), today reported that revenues for its third fiscal quarter ended March 27, 1992, rose more than 12% to a record level of $952.2 million, over the $848.3 million reported for the corresponding period of fiscal 1991. Net income for the third quarter increased nearly 5% to $61.4 million, or $0.60 per share, from the $58.7 million, or $0.56 per share, for the same period a year ago. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation shipped a record 52,000 revenue units, including desktop computers and servers (exclusive of upgrades). SunSoft, Inc., distributed a record number of UNIX(R) licenses, more than 70,000, to users of SPARCR-based and Intel(R)-based platforms, manufacturers of SPARC-based platforms, and other licensees. For the first nine months of fiscal 1992, Sun recorded revenues of $2.62 billion, up 15% from the same period a year earlier. Net income for the nine-month period increased more than 9% to $135.6 million, or $1.34 per share, from the $123.9 million, or $1.21 per share, reported in the corresponding period a year ago. Kevin C. Melia, Sun's chief financial officer, said, "We are pleased with our third quarter results. Led by Japan, year-over-year demand for our product offerings during the just-ended quarter was especially robust in the Pacific Rim, while the United States and Europe experienced more modest growth rates. Revenue per employee for the past 12 months reached $283,000, another record. The company's return on net assets before interest and taxes, RONABIT, increased to 45% from 37% a year ago, further demonstrating our competitive strengths as a low-cost producer and the volume leader in our industry.
