---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunSoft Introduces Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series SunFLASH Vol 40 #14 April 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Accelerates Next-Generation Application Development SUNWORLD, Calif-- April 6, 1992 -- Continuing with its application software momentum, SunSoft, Inc.. today introduced the Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series, a collection of third-party tools available on Solaris 2.0 that enhances software development, accelerating time to market for next-generation applications. Several software vendors participating in SunSoft's Solaris 2.0 Migration Program, including AutoDesk, Cadence Design Systems, Inc. and Gain Technology, endorsed the Master Series for their migration plans. To date, more than 550 developers have enrolled in the Solaris 2.0 Migration Program and more than 200 of the most widely used applications will be running on the Solaris 2.0 solution when it ships in volume this summer. The Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series consists of several programming and development tools for building next-generation applications. The Master Series includes a variety of high-performance compilers that provide assembly, debugging and code analysis capabilities for a wide range of languages; object-oriented database management tools that allow developers to scale performance for distributed applications; and Graphical User Environment (GUE) software which enables developers to visually design and test user interfaces. In addition, the Master Series includes software licensing and distribution technologies. A number of these tools can be seen here today. "The availability of high-performance development technologies on the Solaris 2.0 solution is key to our software developer's success and the continuing momentum of our migration efforts," said Peter Watkins, director of developer marketing at SunSoft. "Our continued focus on providing these enabling technologies removes barriers for software developers, accelerating application migration to Solaris 2.0." "At Cadence, we leverage many enabling technologies to stay ahead of our competition," said Linda Prowse, vice president of strategic relationships at Cadence Design. "The Solaris 2.0 Master Development Series is an innovative approach to coordinating independent porting efforts, helping us decrease our time to market." "AutoCAD utilizes the network licensing technology offered by Elan which is included in the Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series," said Ruth Connolly, general manager, AutoCAD business unit at Autodesk. "Having this and other development technologies available on Solaris 2.0 is a great advantage to us in our porting efforts." Solaris 2.0 Migration Program Today's announcement augments SunSoft's Solaris 2.0 Migration Program which began in 1991, when SunSoft made developer copies of Solaris 2.0 on the SPARC platform available to key customers. In October 1991, SunSoft announced the general availability of the first two components of Solaris 2.0 -- the DeskSet` Version 3 user metaphor and OpenWindows` Version 3 application environment-- giving software developers a head start in creating applications for SPARC and 80X86-based systems. The Early Access Program for Solaris 2.0 on SPARC was launched in January of 1992, and the final phase of this program was the widespread availability of the early access version of Solaris 2.0 to all software developers in March. Availability Products in the Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series are available from the participating companies. Technical support and product updates are available from these com- panies as well. SunSoft will also make available the Solaris 2.0 Master Developer Series on a CD-ROM disc that includes Solaris applications, allowing users to "try and buy" software directly from their desktop. This CD-ROM disc will be available in calendar year 1992.
