---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Tivoli's WizDOM Simplifies Administration Of Sun SPARC Systems SunFLASH Vol 40 #10 April 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMCC and TIVOLI Sign Joint Marketing Agreement MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - April 7, 1992 - Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation today reported that it has teamed with TIVOLI Systems to promote the use of WizDOM(TM) software on SMCC's family of workstations and servers. The two companies will engage in joint marketing activities, including seminars and other promotional efforts that demonstrate the benefits of the WizDOM technology -- considered to be the most advanced solution for centralized administration of distributed UNIX(R) systems. TIVOLI announced in December that it had selected SMCC's industry-leading SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) platform for the initial release of its WizDOM applications (customer shipments began in January). "Adding WizDOM software to the existing selection of products gives our customers a broad range of system management solutions based on the best technology available today," stated Alex Osadzinski, SMCC's director of software product marketing. SMCC's system management offerings include products for high availability and performance, security, and network and system administration. "Today's combination of Sun(TM) systems and WizDOM applications lays a stable foundation for some of the exciting technologies coming down the road," added John Hime, vice president of marketing at TIVOLI. The Sun/TIVOLI system management solution is becoming the standard management platform of the future. For example, SunSoft and TIVOLI will be collaborating on underlying object technology for system management built on the Object Management Group (OMG) standard for distributed computing. The products of this joint development will be incorporated into future releases of the Solaris environment and SMCC will make these technologies available to its customers as they become available from SunSoft. This system software subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., makes the Solaris distributed computing solution that runs on SMCC systems. The WizDOM framework has also been selected as the standard for system administration by several industry organizations, including UNIX International, UNIX System Laboratories and the Open Software Foundation, ensuring users of future interoperability across heterogeneous UNIX systems. SMCC/TIVOLI System Management Solutions The system management products currently available from SMCC include the Online(TM) server software product family, which increases system availability and lowers system administration costs; the Sun SHIELD(TM) family of software security products; and SunNet(TM) Manager, the industry's leading UNIX platform for heterogeneous network management. Both the WizDOM applications and the SMCC system management products are available today, running on Solaris 1.0; future product releases will support the upcoming Solaris 2.0 environment. This new release of Solaris, available on SMCC platforms this summer, features advanced technology that speeds certain administrative tasks. For instance, the Solaris 2.0 environment has a dynamically configurable kernel that eliminates the need to "rebuild" the kernel when adding device drivers or other modules. Solaris 2.0 also includes Network Information Services Plus (NIS+), which improves the security and administration of name services, and the Automated Security Enhancement Tool (ASET) that enables system administrators to easily adjust the levels of security on their networks. And finally, administrators will no longer have to deal with platform-specific administration techniques, because the Solaris 2.0 environment is based on the industry-standard UNIX System V Release 4. Management(TM) (PSM). These products enable system administrators to easily manage distributed environments by automating routine tasks, such as the remote management of hosts, users and groups and the administration of the Kerberos security/authentication system. The WizDOM applications provide a point-and-click interface to replace the usual keyed-in commands, dramatically improving user productivity. Founded in 1989, TIVOLI Systems of Austin, Texas, is the premier provider of object-oriented system management applications and framework technology that dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of managing distributed computer systems. TIVOLI WizDOM technology was selected as a component for UNIX International's Atlas road map and SunSoft's system management foundation, and as a fundamental technology for UNIX System Laboratories' SVR4 and the Open Software Foundation's DME (Distributed Management Environment).
