FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR MORE INFORMATION: Jan. 22, 1992 Laura Ramsey SunSoft 415-336-0739 Emily Wanderer Hi-Tech Public Relations 415-864-5600 SUNSOFT CONTINUES SOFTWARE MOMENTUM FOR SOLARIS 2.0 Oracle, Frame, AutoDesk Demonstrate Applications on Solaris 2.0 Aldus Demonstrates Persuasion Technology on Solaris Lotus cc:Mail Ports to Solaris UNIFORUM, San Francisco, Calif-- Jan. 22, 1992 -- Continuing its software applications momentum, SunSoft today demonstrated several key packages running on its Solaris 2.0 distributed computing solution. Oracle, Frame, AutoDesk and several other software vendors showed their applications, delivering on endorsements made at the Solaris launch last September. Aldus offered a technology demonstration of Persuasion, its desktop presentations product, running on Solaris. In addition, Lotus cc:Mail ported its flagship application, cc:Mail, to the Solaris solution. All of these applications can be seen at SunSoft's booth. SunSoft today also announced the release of CDwareTM Volume 3, a comprehensive CD-ROM demonstration resource for Solaris applications. CDware Volume 3 allows users to "try and buy" applications directly from the desktop with a single phone call. The Compact Disc (CD) contains information on 61 software products from companies including Lotus Development Corp., Informix, SAS Institute and Clarity Software. "Application capture is key to winning the battle for the desktop," said Bill Larson, vice president of marketing and sales for SunSoft. "With today's announcements, we are broadening the Solaris application base in the commercial desktop productivity arena Smooth Migration Path for Developers Software vendors in SunSoft's booth are demonstrating their applications on the Early Access version of Solaris 2.0. Early Access is part of a four-phase Solaris 2.0 delivery program that began in 1991 when the company released developer copies of Solaris 2.0 on the SPARC platform to key customers. The second phase was completed in October when SunSoft began shipping the first two components of Solaris 2.0: DeskSetTM Version 3 and OpenWindowsTM Version 3. Today's product demonstrations will be followed by SunSoft's Catalyst Solaris 2.0 Migration Program, at which time the solution will be available to all of SunSoft's software partners. Applications built on Solaris 2.0 for SPARC today will be source compatible with the Solaris 2.0 solution for the Intel platform, allowing developers to move their applications over with a simple recompile. Aldus Aldus Corp., headquartered in Seattle, Wash., today showed a technology demonstration of Persuasion, the desktop presentations product, running on the Solaris solution. Persuasion is recognized as one of the most popular presentation packages in the industry and has won numerous Readers' Choice surveys and awards including the COMDEX Spring `91 Shootout award, Highest Rating Desktop Presentation Product (Macintosh) from Software Digest, Best Presentation Product (PC) from Infoworld, and the Best Presentation Product (Macintosh) from PCWeek. Lotus cc:Mail Lotus cc:Mail, headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., has ported its flagship application, cc:Mail, to the Solaris solution. Called the cc:Mail OPEN LOOK Platform Pack, the product allows e-mail users to communicate across DOS, OS/2, Windows, Macintosh and UNIX platforms. The cc:Mail OPEN LOOK Platform Pack incorporates the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface standard, and resides on the computer desktop with the Solaris Mail Tool. According to an IDC study completed in September, 1991, cc:Mail is the leading e-mail application for heterogeneous networks and currently has over 1 million users. "The UNIX client port to Solaris is a direct response to customer demand," said Eric Hahn, vice president and general manager of Lotus cc:Mail. "The existing cc:Mail installed base wanted to include UNIX desktops in their heterogeneous e-mail networks, and the cc:Mail OPEN LOOK Platform Pack will allow Solaris users to communicate with DOS and Macintosh users." CDware Volume 3 The CD contains interactive demonstrations and unlockable software that can be purchased directly from the desktop. SunSoft's Catalyst Catalog, containing information on more than 3,400 SPARC-based software products, is also included. Product categories represented on CDware include document/image management and graphics, desktop applications, CASE, CAD and electronic publishing. CDware also features an on-line product literature request facility and registration support via e-mail.
