---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunPro Unveils First Development Tools For Solaris 2.0 SunFLASH Vol 33 #22 September 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- New tools and features highlight SPARCworks Professional development environment MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 23, 1991 _ SunPro, a new Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, today announced new versions of its SPARCworks and SPARCompiler products. The products, known as the SPARCworks Professional series, offer significant enhancements for C++, ANSI C, FORTRAN and Pascal developers. They are the industry's first compilers and productivity tools developed for Solaris 2.0, the recently introduced UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4)-based operating environment from SunSoft. "The SPARCworks Professional series is the key to getting the most out of your application and your development team," said Jon Kannegaard, SunPro general manager. "These products take maximum advantage of the underlying platform to offer the best software development environment for Solaris 2.0." The new features in SPARCworks simplify program development by suppling tools for: - Browsing and graphically displaying the program structure, including C++ class hierarchies. - Debugging optimized code and shared libraries. - Collecting and analyzing application and system performance data. - Comparing and merging multiple versions of files. - Viewing and controlling system build procedures. - Launching and managing individual session tasks. SPARCworks now uses ToolTalk, SunSoft's inter-application communication protocol, to facilitate tight integration between SunPro tools. ToolTalk also provides an open framework for combining products from the industry's leading CASE tool suppliers. Enhanced versions of SPARCompilers for C++, ANSI C, FORTRAN, and Pascal offer improved standards conformance of math and runtime libraries, support for the new extensible linker format (ELF) standard of SVR4, and complete on-line AnswerBook documentation. New releases of SPARCompiler products include: - SPARCompiler C++ 3.0, which is based on the latest release of the UNIX Systems Laboratories de facto standard, Cfront release 3.0, and offers the powerful new feature, parameterized types. - SPARCompiler C 2.0, which supports both ANSI and K&R C, 64-bit integer data types, and migration tools to facilitate moving from SVR3 to SVR4 and from K&R C to ANSI C. - SPARCompiler FORTRAN 2.0, which features faster I/O performance, 64-bit integer data types, and improved viewing of array data within the SPARCworks debugger. The products are now offered in a series of shrink-wrapped SPARCworks Professional packages that include a single SPARCompiler and the SPARCworks toolset, along with CD-ROM media, user manuals, and a full set of on-line documentation. SPARCompiler and SPARCworks products are also available separately. Pricing and Availability Suggested retail pricing in the United States ranges from $1,750 for SPARCworks Professional C to $2,195 for SPARCworks Professional FORTRAN. Separately priced SPARCompiler right-to-use licenses range from $695 for C to $1,075 for FORTRAN. Upgrade pricing and discounts for volume resellers are available. SunPro products can be obtained from Sun Express, Sun's new telephone direct order service, from the Sun Microsystems direct sales force, and from other authorized resellers worldwide. All new versions will be available with the release of Solaris 2.0 in the first half of 1992. About SunPro Formed in July 1991, SunPro is a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
