---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNPICS INTRODUCES "PRINTER'S PALETTE" AT SEYBOLD SunFLASH Vol 34 #3 October 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- One-Stop Shopping for Sun and Third-Party Printing Products MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--October 2, 1991--SunPics, a Sun Microsystems, Inc., business, today introduced Volume One of The Printer's Palette(TM) CD product containing more than 170 hardware and software products from third-party vendors for use in the company's open network printing environment. The Printer's Palette CD makes it easy for users to explore, purchase and install PostScript(R) printing products from third-party vendors. Volume One of the Printer's Palette CD includes more than 20 printers and plotters, 600 F3(TM) fonts, typefaces, file format conversion software, Macintosh(R) computer printing software, and NeWSprint printing services. Complete product information-and often the product itself-is included on the CD, and the products are organized by category to make comparison shopping easy. Many software products on the Printer's Palette CD are offered free of charge and can be installed directly from the CD onto the user's system; software products for sale can be purchased with a call to the vendor, who supplies a password to unlock the product. "The Printer's Palette CD dramatically increases customers' options as they custom-tailor their printing solutions," said William Marr, vice president and general manager of SunPics. "With Printer's Palette, we are expanding NeWSprint software to address the diverse needs of the enterprise-wide computing environment." Open printing is a new approach to printing in which page image processing is performed by the CPU of a SPARC(R) workstation rather than by the printer's CPU. This approach enables almost any output device--from dot matrix, ink jet and laser printers to color thermal printers and plotters--to produce high-quality PostScript output quickly and inexpensively. The cornerstone of open network printing is NeWSprint software, an innovative page-imaging software product that in effect makes printers full network citizens, enabling them to be shared not only within local workgroups but throughout an organization. NeWSprint software, combined with high-speed printers such as SunPics' SPARCprinter(TM) system, provides the basic foundation of the open printing model. The products included in the Printer's Palette CD enable customers to build on that foundation. Customers can quickly and easily add third-party printers and other printing tools. The Printer's Palette CD will be available beginning November 4, 1991. The product will be bundled with a future version of NeWSprint software, or is available through local Sun sales offices, value-added resellers and distributors. To use the Printer's Palette CD, customers need a SPARCstation(TM) system running the SunOS(TM) system (4.1 or higher) and the OpenWindows(R) environment (2.0 or 3.0), and a SunCD(TM) drive (either attached or networked). The products on the Printer's Palette CD will be supported by the companies that supplied them.
