---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN LAUNCHES SUNPICS TO FOCUS ON PRINTING AND IMAGING MARKET SunFLASH Vol 34 #1 October 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Formation of the New Business Signals Sun's Growing Commitment to the Printing Market MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --October 2, 1991-- Sun Microsystems, Inc., today formally introduced SunPics, a business unit dedicated to designing and marketing technology for the printing and imaging marketplace. The creation of SunPics (Printing and Imaging Computer Systems) on July 1, 1991 underscored Sun's commitment to the printing business. SunPics develops and markets products that make printing faster, less expensive, and more flexible for network-based workgroups. With a new approach to network printing and a complete line of innovative products, SunPics reinforces Sun's aggressive drive into broad, general-purpose computer markets--particularly those dominated by PCs--and has expanded the printing market by increasing users' printing capabilities. "With financial backing from Sun Microsystems, Inc., a $3 billion company, SunPics has the resources to compete effectively in the multibillion-dollar printing market", said Scott McNealy, president and chief executive officer of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Yet as a business unit, it has the ability to respond quickly to its customers' changing requirements." SunPics maintains its own engineering, marketing, sales, and technical support staff at its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. The cornerstone of the SunPics product line is the NeWSprint (TM) software system, a page-imaging product based on the NeWS(R) windowing system that offers PostScript(R) language compatibility. NeWSprint software lets users store fonts in a server rather than at the printer, so the fonts can be distributed to any video display or output device on the network for WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) printing. NeWSprint software lets users share printers not only within local workgroups, but throughout an organization. NeWSprint software also allows page imaging to be performed by the SPARC(R) CPU of the user's workstation, speeding the imaging process and reducing printer costs. NeWSprint software is bundled with 57 F3(TM) format scalable outline fonts, and contains TypeScaler(TM) software for quick-and-easy F3 font creation and scaling. More than 1,200 additional fonts are currently available from major type suppliers, including Linotype, Monotype, Bigelow & Holmes, URW, Autologic, Morisawa (Kanji fonts) and others. SunPics will also market the SPARCprinter(TM) system, a laser printer that leverages the CPU and memory of SPARC(R) computers and servers. The SPARCprinter system can print even complex graphics at a rate of 12 pages per minute, with selectable print resolution of 300 or 400 dpi. SunPics has recently introduced the Printer's Palette(TM) CD, a product that contains more than 170 software and hardware products from third-party vendors for use with the NeWsprint system. Customers can explore, purchase and install products ranging from F3 fonts and document conversion tools to printer hardware. All SunPics products are sold through local Sun sales offices and Sun value-added resellers.
