Online: DiskSuite allows users to continue working despite the failure of a disk or controller by "mirroring" disk partitions. Mirroring makes a duplicate copy of written data, so that users can still access their data even if the single disk they would normally write to or read from has failed. Online: DiskSuite improves on SPARCserver Manager by providing three-way mirroring, which allows users to write to up to three disks simultaneously. Three-way mirroring insures that users will have an extra copy of data even after their first disk has failed. Online: DiskSuite also enables mirroring of root and swap partitions. Mirroring the root and swap partitions (aka the system disk) prevents the failure of the system disk from crashing the system. Online: DiskSuite has "full replication consistency" -- up-to-date status information is kept on *all* mirrored data -- there is *no* chance of inadvertently getting stale data. Online: DiskSuite also supports "hot spares" -- extra disks can be called upon to automatically replace a failed disk in a two- or three-way mirror set. Online: DiskSuite allows file systems to grow, online, up to 1 Terabyte. (Individual files still are subject to the 2 Gigabyte UNIX limit.) Files and file systems can span multiple disk drives. Online: DiskSuite is essential for financial services, electronic publishing, and telecomm customers with high data availability requirements. Online: IPI Dual Port ===================== With the announcement of Online: IPI Dual Port, Sun further increases the system and data availability for high end server customers. Online: IPI Dual Port enables the users to access data stored on IPI disks despite a system or controller failure. In the event of a system or controller failure, software commands are used to manually switch the IPI disks to a second system. It should be understood that the IPI disks were previously cabled to both systems. The switchover can be activated either locally or remotely. Used together, Online: DiskSuite and Online: IPI Dual Port provide user access to a server and their data in the event of a disk, controller or system failure. This is ideal for applications in the financial services, electronic publishing and telecommunication markets where dependable data availability is crucial. Backup Copilot ============== Backup Copilot addresses three weaknesses of traditional UNIX backup facilities: backup speed; safe, consistent, online backup; and ease-of-use. On most UNIX implementations, a safe and consistent backup cannot be performed while users are logged on: it's too easy for the backup software to miss files and directories created or moved during the backup process. As a result, most UNIX systems are brought down into single-user mode for backup, adversely impacting customers who want their systems available around-the-clock and accessible from around the world. Backup Copilot is Sun's answer. A new, incremental file system locking scheme allows unattended, *on-line* network backups. Users can stay online, and do work, while the system administrator is backing up their files and directories. Backup Copilot also improves backup times by speeding up traditional algorithms and allowing multiple tape drives to back up files in a Sun environment simultaneously. Finally, Backup Copilot improves ease-of-use. Backups can be scheduled for off-hours and run unattended (assuming enough tape drives and tapes are available so that no tape changing is required.) An on-line index makes restores from tapes easier. Backup Copilot is also compatible with the Sun standard dump formats so that older Sun tapes can be read easily. SunSoft "Commercial Extensions Products", the Online Series, and Sun Shield =========================================================================== SunSoft recently announced its Commercial Extensions Products for Solaris 1.0 and 2.0. The Commercial Extensions Products included Online: DiskSuite, Backup Copilot, Account Resource Management (ARM) and the Automated Security Enhancement Tool (ASET). SunSoft positioned these products together as the "Commercial Extensions Products" as part of its effort push to move Sun's Unix offerings into more mainstream, commercial application areas. SunSoft has even coined the phrase "Gray Flannel Unix". SMCC supports SunSoft's movements into these environments with the Commercial Extensions Products and is offering all of the components of this package to its customers. SMCC adds Online: IPI Dual Port to Online: DiskSuite and Backup Copilot to create the Online family of products emphasizing high availability for **ALL** it's customers, commercial or technical. SMCC, recognizing that there is a critical need for software security in the commercial marketplace as well as in government and university installations, provides the Sun SHIELD family of software security products. Sun SHIELD includes ARM, ASET, Secure RPC, C2 security, and the SunOS encryption kit, as well as various third party UNIX security solutions for systems security. In short, SMCC supports SunSoft's Commercial Extensions Products. The Online family should be of interest to all customers interested in high availability, and SunSHIELD should be of interest to all customers concerned about security. Step 2: "System disks" are physically attached to and accessed by only one system. If they have dual-port capabilities, those capabilities are not used. A "system disk" typically holds SunOS and any other application software that the system uses. "Data disks" are physically attached to both systems and the Online: IPI Dual Port Option takes advantage of their dual-port capabilities. number of ISP-80 controllers with "data disks" on 1st system = number of ISP-80 controllers with "data disks" on 2nd system = ------- total number of ISP-80 controllers with "data disks" on both systems ordered in Step 1 above = Step 3: The following table shows the correct quantity of parts to be ordered: ----------------------------------------------------------------- |Total number of ISP-80 Quantity | |controllers with "data Order to | |disks" on both systems Number Order | |---------------------- ------ --------- | | 2 X2085A 1 | | IPI-1.0-411-4-21 1 | | | | 3 X2085A 1 | | X418A 1 | | IPI-1.0-411-4-21 1 | | | | 4 X2085A 2 | | IPI-1.0-411-4-21 1 | | | | 5 X2085A 2 | | X418A 1 | | IPI-1.0-411-4-21 1 | ----------------------------------------------------------------- Step 4: Please note that the maximum number of ISP-80 controllers on each SPARCserver systems cannot exceed four if running SunOS 4.1.1, and cannot exceed five if running SunOS 4.1.2. Step 5: The "Online: IPI Dual Port Expansion Cable Kit", part number X2086A, is necessary for 1-GB 3MB/s and 911-MB 6MB/s 8-inch IPI drives only. (The 1.3-GB 5.25-inch IPI drive has these expansion cables pre-wired in its mounting tray.) For each controller with 8-inch "data disks", the correct quantity of Expansion Cable Kits to order can be looked up in the table below. This calculation needs to be repeated for all controllers on both systems. ----------------------------------------------------------------- |Number of 8-inch "data disks" | |on a single ISP-80 controller 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | | | |Number of additional 0.5m | |cable needed 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | | |Quatity of X2086A to order 0 0 1 1 2 2 3 3 | ----------------------------------------------------------------- Step 6: The IPI Dual Port Option is to be field-installed to achieve the desired dual port configurations. Ordering Example ---------------- Customer wants to order dual port configuration of two SPARCserver 490 systems. The 1st SPARCserver 490 is to have: - 1st ISP-80 controller connected to one "system disk" and three "data disks"; - 2nd ISP-80 controller connected to six "data disks". The 2nd SPARCserver is to have: - 1st ISP-80 controller connected to four "system disks"; - 2nd ISP-80 controller connected to six "data disks"; - 3rd ISP-80 controller connected to eight "data disks". Step 1: Order the two SPARCserver 490 systems from the "SPARC Data Center Servers" section. Step 2: The 1st system has two controllers with "data disks", and the 2nd system has two controllers with "data disks". Hence, there is a total of four controllers with "data disks" for both systems. Step 3: According to the table on the previous page, the following needs to be ordered for a total of four controllers with "data disks" on both systems: quantity two of X2085A quantity one of IPI-1.0-411-4-21 Step 4: After installing X2085A, each of the two systems will have five ISP-80 controllers. This has not exceeded the maximum number of controllers supported if running SunOS 4.1.2. Step 5: Based on the following calculation, quantity eight of X2086A needs to be ordered if all "data disks" on both systems are 8-inch IPI disks. X2086A is not necessary for 1.3GB 5.25-inch IPI disks. On the 1st system: If all three "data disks" on the 1st controller are 8" IPI drives, order quantity one of X2086A. If all six "data disks" on the 2nd controller are 8" IPI drives, order quantity two of X2086A. On the 2nd system: If all six "data disks" on the 2nd controller are 8" IPI drives, order quantity two of X2086A. If all eight "data disks" on the 3rd controller are 8" IPI drives, order quantity three of X2086A. Step 6: The IPI Dual Port Option is to be field installed when all the components arrive at the customer site. Option Content -------------- o Part number X2085A includes two ISP-80 controllers, three PROM sets, two 8m-cables, three 0.5m-cables, two terminators and one ground strap. o Part number X2086A includes two 0.5m-cables. o Part number IPI-1.0-411-4-21 includes software on CD-ROM, manual and Right-to-Use License. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
