PE Nelson, a division of Perkin Elmer and the industry leader in the LIMS market, announced the availability of their SQL*LIMS product on Sun in August. PE Nelson has over 500 installations. SQL*LIMS was developed using the 4th generation development tools of Oracle and installed in over 125 locations. Typical users for this product are pharmaceutical and chemical companies. SQL*LIMS in the only LIMS application with true relational database and client/server options. It is the ideal LIMS solution available for laboratories requiring Good Laboratory Practices/Good Manufacturing Practices/ISO 9000 compliance. Previously available only on DEC VAX computers, PE Nelson believes that porting to Sun's SPARC platform will allow their users to take advantage of the computational power of UNIX and the scalability of the client-server environment. All of these features result in enhanced management of the diverse functions and resources which are necessary in the analytical laboratory. In addition, open systems allows a greater level of networking compatibility in the increasingly heterogeneous field of analytical laboratory information management. PE Nelson is an authorized Sun VAR and Passport customer. For US inquiries, please contact Mike Elliott, VP of Sales, at (708) 572-9060. Currently available only in the US, Canada, and Latin America, SQL*LIMS on Sun will be marketed in Europe in March 1992. BASIC PROGRAM FEATURES Designed to be used with the Sun Operating System, Open Windows Mail Tool and the standard UNIX electronic mail system, Personal Postmaster organizes mail for quick review by placing messages in separate mail folders. Each mail folder can be identified by a mail tool which has its own distinctive color so users can quickly identify the importance of messages. Additionally, users can be notified when messages are received by assigning different sounds (a whistle, gong, voice recording, etc.) which play according to the type of message received. For example, a gong can be assigned to go off when messages are received from a co-worker and a bell can sound when messages are received from a customer. In order to sort the messages, Personal Postmaster searches header information (To, From, CC, Subject, Date), and text in the body of the message, for words, names, phrases or dates that the user identifies as important. ADVANCED PROGRAM FEATURES The advanced version of Personal Postmaster offers two additional capabilities -- mail agents and cascading sort lists. The mail agent feature works in conjunction with other UNIX commands to provide robust functionality only limited by the user's creativity and ability to write UNIX scripts. For example, Personal Postmaster can automatically forward routine messages each time they are received, such as regularly forwarding the boss' weekly report to all subordinates. Another example would be to have certain messages from customers or prospects start a process which automatically sends marketing literature back via electronic mail. The cascading sort list feature allows for more extensive sorting of messages. With the basic version, a user can file messages marked "urgent" into one mail folder and messages from the boss into a second folder. With the advanced version, Personal Postmaster can perform a cascaded sort by filing all "urgent" messages from the boss into a third mail folder. This extensive sorting feature also allows users to select different sounds for mail received from the same person, but pertaining to different subjects.
