---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SimplifySQL 1.1 SunFLASH Vol 35 #14 November 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Announcing the SimplifySQL 1.1 release with OpenWindows and INFORMIX support o Easy to use, OPEN LOOK(TM) point-and-click access to databases o Adds support for INFORMIX, in addition to previous support for INGRES, ORACLE, and SYBASE o Runs reports from scripts for unattended batch operation o Runs in OpenWindows Version 2, SunOS 4.1 or 4.1.1 SimplifySQL 1.1 now runs in OpenWindows, bringing ease of use, productivity, and graphical database access to users of the 4 major UNIX relational database management systems (DBMS): INFORMIX, INGRES, ORACLE, and SYBASE. WHAT IS SimplifySQL? -------------------- For database novices or experts, the SimplifySQL OPEN LOOK(TM) interface lets users point and click to retrieve data, update databases, interactively create reports and even create databases. Unlike character-based interfaces, SimplifySQL gives users a graphical way to access the data and create the reports they need, thereby increasing productivity dramatically. Users can share their database query results with other applications such as spreadsheets or word processors. By presenting users with the same consistent user interface for the major UNIX databases, SimplifySQL is an ideal database front-end in an open systems environment. This is especially attractive to organizations that require access to more than one DBMS or may need to migrate from one DBMS to another, because it reduces vendor dependence and training time for end users. Graphical Queries and Updates The SimplifySQL DataBrowse tool makes ad-hoc queries quick and easy. DataBrowse gives users a graphical model for creating queries without the need to know structured query language (SQL). Interactive, Customized Reports For customized reports, the ReportWrite tool gives unparalleled ease of use and control. With several default formats to choose from, simply point and click to freely customize report formats, with no need to learn a report-scripting language. With SimplifySQL, it's easy to set up preformatted reports for end users, or let users customize reports to meet their specific needs. Database Design and Maintenance When advanced users need to modify or create a database, the SchemaDesign tool gives them a graphical view of their database design and an easy way to edit it. SchemaDesign shows table relationships at a glance, giving a picture of the overall structure. SchemaDesign also lets users graphically view and edit the entire database structure, including table and field definitions, the data dictionary, and external data types. By using "external data types", SchemaDesign users build references to multimedia files and applications into a database, so that database queries can display images or playback sound online. Features: Benefits: o Intuitive, graphical interface for o Improves user productivity by database queries and reports letting users focus on data analysis instead of a complex data access language. o Eliminates the need to know query and report-writing languages o Empowers the end user while reducing the support backlog of database administrators and MIS o Consistent interface to the leading o Reduces vendor dependence and UNIX database management systems training time, when accessing (INFORMIX, INGRES, ORACLE, SYBASE) more than one DBMS or migrating from one to another o External data types o Supports multimedia data such as audio, video, and graphics o Graphical database design tools o Allows advanced users to easily create and maintain databases o Run reports from UNIX scripts o Allows users to run reports unattended o Queries across multiple databases o Lets users access data (within one DBMS) residing in multiple databases in one step HARDWARE & SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ---------------------------------- o Systems: SPARC only, runs on all SPARCstations, can access local or networked databases. o SunOS: Requires SunOS 4.1 or 4.1.1. o Window system: OpenWindows version 2. o Memory: 8 MB minimum, 12 MB recommended. o Media: CD-ROM only.
