SMCC has seventeen international subsidiaries. With this addition, SMCC now has a total of seven subsidiaries in its "intercontinental" region, which includes Asia, Canada, Latin America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Sun began doing business in Korea in 1988. The formation of Sun Microsystems Korea Ltd. underscores SMCC's rapid growth in the Korean market, which is the second largest in Asia, following Japan. According to International Data Corporation, Sun is the leading workstation vendor in Korea, with 34% of the market (units) in 1990. The subsidiary will extend local support for SMCC's large Korean installed base. SMCC will continue to work with key resellers, customer support representatives and local software developers to extend penetration of Sun(TM) products into markets such as finance and office automation. The subsidiary will continue localization efforts, developing diverse font types and standard user interfaces. Sun Microsystems Korea Ltd. has additional plans to establish a local third-party vendor program which will strengthen the relationship with local software developers and support development of the UNIX software environment by encouraging technology transfer and training. The Korean subsidiary, located in Seoul, will be headed by Y.D. Kim. PR contact Susanne K.
