You should expect to see one or two SunFlash articles every other day or so. As I produce this mailing list in addition to my normal job, there will still be occasions when there will be quite periods followed by a burst of articles. I'll try not to let that happen. If you find material that would make a good SunFlash article, please send it to me for consideration and I'll post it. John J. McLaughlin System Engineer & SunFlash Editor Ft. (SUNW), today reported that net income for its first quarter ended September 27, 1991 improved slightly to $26.8 million, or $0.27 per share, compared with $26.1 million, or $0.26 per share, for the corresponding period of fiscal 1991. Revenues for the quarter were $754.9 million, an 11% increase over the $677.0 million reported for the same period a year ago. Kevin C. Melia, Sun's chief financial officer, said, "Our fiscal 1992 first quarter results are at the low end of the range that management believed possible. As we stated in our previous two earnings releases, the seasonality prevalent in the computer industry is now a factor for Sun. In those releases, we cautioned against expecting sequential quarterly gains in revenues, net income or earnings per share, especially in the first quarter of each fiscal year. Our first quarter results demonstrate the effectiveness of our leveraged business model in dealing with the types of uncertainty inherent in the computer industry." 35.02 OpenWindows Version 3 Available SunSoft Shipping First Components Of Solaris 2.0 SunSoft, a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, today introduced the first shipping components of Solaris 2.0: OpenWindows Version 3, DeskSet Version 3 and Developer's Guide 3.0. This application framework will allow third-party software developers to build next-generation distributed applications. The announcement today continues a joint-development pact announced by SunSoft and HP in February 1991. At that time, the companies submitted a Distributed Object Management Facility (DOMF) to the Object Management Group (OMG), a standards organization founded to promote the theory and practice of object-management technology in the development of software. In a related announcement today, the OMG announced its standard specification for the Object Request Broker (ORB), which includes the merged submissions of HP, SunSoft, NCR, Object Design, HyperDesk and DEC and incorporates the DOMF functionality. 35.04 Vicom Will Now Sell, Support Sun's Visualization Accelerators (VX, MVX) MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --October 28, 1991-- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and Vicom Systems, a leading supplier of imaging and visualization products, have signed an agreement under which Vicom will offer high-end visualization accelerators for the SPARCstation(TM) platform.
