The project, also involving Focus Infotech and CSA Group's Automated Systems Limited (ASL), has reinforced Sun's leadership in the commercial market where, based on workstation and server revenues, it holds a 38.2 per cent unit share (IDC 1990). 29.02 SPARC sessions for SVR4 conference This is a message from reginafr@ism.isc.com (Regina Freeman): I've attached a bulletin which detail a special SPARC-oriented all day session (June 4) at the first annual developer conference for UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) sponsored by INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation (June 2-5). If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 2l3-453-8649 ext. 3l69 or Jay Bretzmann at 708-505-9l00 ext. 38l. INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation is hosting a full-day session devoted to the SPARC marketplace in conjunction with its first annual developer conference, June 2 - 5, l99l at the Universal City Hilton, Universal City, Calif. (near Los Angeles). On Tuesday, June 4, l99l under the heading, "Systems Software for the RISC Platforms", INTERACTIVE will lead a hard hitting discussion focused on the state of SPARC technology and addresses critical market issues such as: 29.03 Groupe Bull Supports HP & Sun FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- May 15, 1991 -- Groupe Bull announced its support for the Hewlett-Packard/Sun Microsystems submission to the Object Management Group (OMG), an international organization of system vendors and users. Groupe Bull will strengthen HP/Sun's proposal by supporting their response to the OMG's request for Object Request Broker (ORB) technology. ORB defines an advanced method for using and sharing information on networked computers from different vendors. Groupe Bull was one of the original submittors to the OMG with technology referred to as the Comandos Object Manager. Groupe Bull, HP and Sun, in an effort to further their shared vision of object management, have agreed to integrate Comandos Object Manager with the Distributed Object Management Facility proposed to the OMG by HP and Sun. The complementary technologies from Comandos Object Manager and the Distributed OMG will provide a solution for the ORB which can be quickly adapted by the industry. 29.04 NCR/Object Design And HP/Sun Join Forces DAYTON, Ohio -- May 14, 1991 -- NCR Corporation and Object Design, Inc., and Hewlett-Packard Company and Sun Microsystems, Inc. have joined forces to propose an object management specification to the Object Management Group (OMG), an international organization of systems vendors and users. Together, these companies provide a comprehensive response to the OMG's request for Object Request Broker (ORB) technology. ORB defines an advanced method for using and sharing information on networked computers from different vendors. Third-party software vendors can use these methods to lower the cost of writing portable applications that can interoperate in distributed computing environments. 29.05 Sun Agreement With Japanese Type Vendor TOKYO --May 23, 1991-- Sun Microsystems and its Japanese subsidiary, Nihon Sun Microsystems, have signed technology licensing agreements with leading type vendor Morisawa & Co., Ltd., of Osaka, Japan, that will enable scalable Japanese outline fonts to be bundled on a UNIX(R) system for the first time. The agreements are part of Sun's strategy to extend its "common imaging model" for UNIX to the Japanese market. In this model, built-in fonts can be both displayed and printed as part of a simple, cost-effective computing solution. Commercial environments, in particular, can improve productivity and lower costs through such a model. Morisawa will use Sun's innovative software tools, called TypeMaker(TM), to produce versions of several Morisawa fonts in the scalable outline F3(TM) format. Sun plans to include two of the popular Morisawa Japanese fonts in F3 format with all Sun SPARCstations(TM), SPARCservers(TM) and printing products sold in Japan. In addition, Morisawa will offer other Japanese fonts in F3 to software developers and end users. 29.06 Sun's Hottest, Volume 1, Number 4 This is the text of a newsletter, "Sun's Hottest", that is being mailed to Sun customers. It increases both the performance and the number of concurrent users of these systems. SunDBE is the kernel that was used to obtain the excellent TPC-B benchmark numbers with Sybase and Informix, and it greatly increases performance for Ingres and Oracle as well. SunDBE 1.0 for use only with SunOS 4.1 was released in the fall of 1990, and was described in the August 1990 STB. The newest release is SunDBE 1.1 for use only with SunOS 4.1.1 and SunOS 4.1.1 Rev B, and it is available now. In this article we use SunDBE to refer to SunDBE 1.1. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
