---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Software Alliance Teams Up With Sun Microsystems To Offer Total Banking Solution SunFLASH Vol 27 #20 March 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Partnership Represents Sun's First Reseller Relationship In Banking Systems Market BERKELEY, Calif., March 25, 1991 -- Software Alliance Corporation (SA) announced today that it has teamed up with Sun Microsytems, Inc. to provide banks a comprehensive and cost-effective data processing environment. The new environment will include SA's Total Banking Solution (TBS) running on Sun's family of UNIX-based workstations and server. TBS, a comprehensive, truly integrated data processing solution, provides all key banking applications from demand deposits to commercial loans. Running in Sun's client/server computing environment, TBS manages the operations of an entire bank, while providing hefty reductions in computer operations costs. "We can cut total operations costs by a factor of three to five compared to mainframes with this new architecture," said Software Alliance vice president David Spicer, adding, "The functionality and price/performance provided by TBS and Sun will be hard to beat." Software Alliance chose to market TBS with Sun Microsystems because of Sun's leadership position in the financial services market and its complete dedication to the UNIX operating system. "UNIX promises to open the door to unsurpassed flexibility and price/performance for banks, and Sun Microsystems is uniquely positioned to deliver on that promise," said Spicer. "Total Banking Solution maps directly into the technology where Sun is strong -- the UNIX distributed computing, client/server model," said Jordan Graham, manager of financial services marketing for Sun Microsystems. "Software Alliance is the first banking software company to recognize the trend toward this architecture," Jordan added. The partnership with Software Alliance is Sun's first reseller relationship with a banking software company. Depending on an individual bank's needs, Sun Microsystems can provide a full range of computer products -- from entry-level workstations to powerful, high-end workstations and servers. In addition, Sun's networking technology allows TBS sites to integrate a variety of desktop equipment besides Sun workstations, including MS-DOS PCs, Macintosh computers and dumb terminals. Because of UNIX's inherent networking capability, Software Alliance will be able to offer TBS/Sun clients the option of remote facilities management, an innovative alternative to in-house operations, service bureaus or traditional facilities management. Under such an arrangement, the equipment resides at the bank, but is operated via a dedicated telephone line by Software Alliance, which performs all monitoring and tuning of the system and application. The result is dramatic savings in personnel and operations costs. TBS' integration provides for customer relationship processing, including account analysis and marketing support. In addition, the open system design of TBS allows for easy connection with other systems, including ATMs and PC-based applications for document preparation, platform automation and spreadsheet modeling. TBS can be purchased as a turnkey system or customized for larger banks requiring additional features and functions. Software Alliance is a leading independent provider of consulting, integration services and software, serving financial institutions from community banks to money center banks. The company has extensive experience in integrated banking systems, trust and securities systems, imaging and multi-function workstations. Headquartered in Berkeley, California, the company has nine regional offices throughout the United States. Software Alliance is an affiliate of Tenekron, a $200-million group of technology companies.
