---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Microsystems Foundation Awards Community Grants SunFLASH Vol 27 #18 March 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- $323,641 Awarded in Support of Community Development MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --March 25, 1990-- The Sun Microsystems Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit charitable organization, announced today that it has awarded $323,641 in community development grants to organizations in the San Francisco and Boston areas, two regions in which Sun Microsystems has its largest operations. The grants will support programs in education, job training, leadership and business enterprise. Today's awards bring total contributions from both the company and the foundation to more than $1,159,000 since April 1990. The Sun Microsystems Foundation has donated a total of $130,372 to organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The recipients are: * Haas Center for Public Service (Stanford University), to fund Upward Bound, which provides support services to low-income minority high school students to prepare them for admission to post-secondary educational programs; * Cogswell Polytechnical College (Cupertino, Calif.), to send low-income junior high school students to a summer camp for young entrepreneurs and inventors; * Catholic Charities (Santa Clara, Calif.), to provide a full-time job developer for mentally ill adults; * Center for Employment Training (San Jose), to fund a job development and placement counselor for women in the center's Child Development vocational training program; * Occupational Training Institute/GAIN (Foothill and DeAnza Colleges, Cupertino), for a program to help recipients of Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) acquire and develop vocational skills; * New Ways to Work (San Francisco and East Palo Alto, Calif.), to extend a successful job training and development program that expands the number of part-time jobs available to "at-risk" youth; * San Jose Area Youth at Risk (San Jose), for the evaluation of a program designed to reduce drop-out rates and improve school performance among "at-risk" high school students. In the greater Merrimack Valley north of Boston, Massachusetts, the foundation awarded $193,269 to: * Family Service Association of Greater Lawrence (Lawrence, Mass.), for a program that teaches self esteem, decision-making and leadership skills to seventh- and eighth-grade students, who then implement similar activities with third graders; * Lawrence Public Schools (Lawrence), for a six-week summer program for students at risk of being retained in the eighth grade; * Career Beginnings, Heller School Center for Corporate and Education Initiatives, Brandeis University (Waltham, Mass.), for a program to provides career and educational opportunities to pregnant teenagers and teenage parents, with Sun employees as mentors; * Lawrence Youth Commission (Lawrence, Mass.), for a leadership and team development program for Hispanics; * Community Action, Inc. (Haverhill, Mass.), for a resource center that provides higher education information and referral services to economically disadvantaged area residents; * Coalition for a Better Acre (Lowell, Mass.), for the HELP (Hispanic Empowerment and Leadership Project) initiative; * Phillips Academy (Andover, Mass.), for a program in which teachers and students teach, mentor and tutor "at-risk" seventh and eighth graders in Lawrence, Mass. Organizations interested in receiving grants from the foundation submit proposals that are screened by a team of Sun employees. This team includes both management and non-management staff. Recommendations for funding are then submitted to the foundation for consideration. The Sun Microsystems Foundation, Inc., was formed in December 1990 by Sun Microsystems as a vehicle to share the company's success with and support the economic development of the communities where Sun employees live and work worldwide. In addition to community grants, the foundation's activities include the Employee Matching Gifts Program. Since January 1990, the company and the foundation have matched $107,203 in employee donations to qualified nonprofit organizations.
