---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun's Operating System Receives XPG3 Base Branding From X/Open SunFLASH Vol 27 #10 March 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --March 11, l991-- Sun Microsystems today announced that its UNIX(R) operating system, SunOS(TM), has received X/Open's Portability Guide 3 (XPG3) BASE branding. X/Open, the leading international open systems organization in the computer industry, has branded the SunOS/SVR4 Development and Test Platform, a suite of products that enables software developers to create applications based on UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4). SVR4 is the next-generation operating system standard for UNIX. BASE branding signifies 100 percent compliance with the foundation level of the XPG3 branding specifications. These specifications combine both formal and de facto standards for open system interfaces. The SunOS/SVR4 Development and Test Platform is part of Sun's migration to SVR4. The company's end user release of SVR4 will be available at the end of the year and will also carry the XPG3 BASE brand. XPG3 branding means that SunOS provides standard programming interfaces that enable easy development of portable applications and encourage application interoperability. "As a company long committed to standards, we feel XPG3 BASE branding continues to demonstrate our efforts to offer an open systems environment," said Cynthia Typaldos, director of standards at Sun. To earn the brand, the SunOS product passed a comprehensive set of tests that determine compliance with major portions of the XPG3 BASE specifications. Under the branding program, a special X/Open trademarked symbol is licensed to companies whose computer operating systems and/or components are tested and verified to meet the XPG3 specifications. These are not the first Sun products to receive X/Open branding. Last June, Sun announced that nine of its essential system software components and three significant products from third-party vendors had also been given XPG3 brands. Among the Sun products were the OpenWindows(TM) application environment, several components of SunOS 4.1 and various Sun compilers. Also certified were Structured Query Language (SQL) database products for Sun systems from Informix, as well as Ada compilers for Sun from Verdix and Telesoft. X/Open is a nonprofit organization of vendors, independent software vendors and end users worldwide that are working to promote an open systems environment. The goal of XPG3 compatibility is interoperability among hardware and software. As an active member of X/Open, Sun strongly promotes the acceptance of these specifications worldwide. X/Open and the X symbol are trademarks of X/Open Company, Ltd., in the United Kingdom and other countries.
