---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash New Releases Of DEC Connectivity Products From Sun Offer Enhanced Ease Of Use SunFLASH Vol 27 #4 March 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON, D.C. --March 5, 1991-- Sun Microsystems today introduced new versions of its connectivity products, SunLink(R) DNI and SunLink TE100, that broaden and simplify interoperability for users of Sun workstations and servers linked to Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VAX/VMS-based systems. SunLink DNI 7.0 allows application, data and management-level interoperability between Sun and DECnet-based VAX systems from DEC. With SunLink TE100 6.1, Sun workstation users can interactively access applications on systems from DEC or other vendors that support VT100 terminals. By installing TE100 on a Sun system for VT100 terminal emulation, users can access a VAX/VMS host in a window-based manner instead of having to use a terminal. "With these upgrades, Sun and DEC systems are more tightly integrated in environments where DEC and Sun networks co-exist." said Cheryl Vedoe, vice president of software product marketing at Sun. "Connectivity products like these further hasten the move of Sun workstations into commercial environments that, before now, have been dominated by vendors of proprietary systems." Several features were added to SunLink DNI 7.0 that give Sun end users, application developers and network administrators increased functionality, as well as greater ease of use: End Users Added support of Sun's X11/NeWS(TM) Window System allows Sun workstation users to access DEC Windows applications transparently. This lets users display information from DEC Windows and Xll/NeWS applications on their screen. In addition, a VMS mail gateway facility has been added, which is an effective, inexpensive solution for seamless mail exchange between Sun and DEC machines. This means Sun and DEC VAX mail users may directly exchange mail instead of maintaining multiple mailboxes. Application Developers Because developers want to design interoperating applications on VAX and Sun systems, SunLink DNI features two programmer interfaces that permit program-level interoperability: the DECnet task-to-task interface and a file access interface. These allow developers to write new distributed applications that run on Sun and DEC systems, as well as ease the porting of existing distributed applications from DEC environments to mixed Sun and DEC environments. Network Administrators With SunLink DNI, Sun maintains its commitment to providing network management for all Sun networking products. The product now includes the SunNet(TM) Manager proxy agent, for the collection of data from all DECnet nodes on the network. This information is then forwarded to the SunNet Manager console so network managers can easily manage heterogeneous environments. In addition, network administrators can now share network management information between Sun and DEC systems, since SunLink DNI has new commands within its DECnet Network Control Program (NCP) utility. With NCP, the network configuration database can be copied from another node rather than recreating it manually. Availability SunLink DNI 7.0, which is available on CD-ROM and is bundled with SunLink TE100 6.1 is also available separately on CD-ROM.
