---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash New Color Printers Bring To 60 The Number Of Postscript-Compatible Devices Supporting NeWSprint SunFLASH Vol 27 #2 March 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun's Solution for Networked Printing Receives Extensive Third-Party Support BOSTON --March 4, 1991-- Sun Microsystems today reported that three new color printer manufacturers now support its NeWSprint(TM) software. The addition of these companies' six printers brings to 60 the number of third-party output devices that have achieved PostScript(R) compatibility as a result of Sun's innovative printing solution. Introduced in September, NeWSprint makes workgroup printing less expensive, flexible and faster than it has ever been before. Customers can now use the printer of their choice and get PostScript-compatible output anywhere on the network. The announcement was made at the 1991 Seybold Seminars - Professional Publishing Conference, being held here. The new devices that now support NeWSprint include: Mitsubishi Electronics' color thermal wax transfer and continuous tone/color dye diffusion printers; Sharp's color ink jet; and Tektronix' color thermal wax transfer printer. With these additions, the number of output devices supporting NeWSprint has tripled in just five months. Other devices ranging from personal ink jet, laser, color and wide-bed plotters currently supporting NeWSprint are offered by: Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi/Shinko, Okidata, Raster Graphics, Seiko, Talaris and Versatec. NeWSprint also connects Sun workstations to traditional PostScript printers, such as those from Apple and QMS. In addition, Sun's new SPARCprinter(TM) laser printer also supports NeWSprint, delivering 300 or 400 dots per inch, producing output at a rate of 12 pages per minute. An Innovative Printing Concept NeWSprint gives UNIX(R) users a new way of printing that complements the performance and distributed computing capabilities found in UNIX client/server organizations. This software product resides in a Sun SPARCstation(TM), but allows any computer on the network to send PostScript printing jobs to the many NeWSprint-compatible output devices via the Sun system. "This is a new printing paradigm," said Anil Gadre, vice president of systems product marketing at Sun. "With no expensive processor required in the printer, its cost can be reduced significantly. NeWSprint brings the strengths of the SPARCstation to printing: the power of SPARC(R), the flexibility of ONC(TM) and the ease of use of OPEN LOOK(R)." NeWSprint is an example of Sun's commitment to open products that leverage a user's existing investment and comply with industry standards. This printing solution can take advantage of the NeWS(R) technology within Sun's OpenWindows(TM) user environment, providing a unified imaging model between the screen and output. This gives users true WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get). NeWSprint comes bundled with 57 brand name, scalable, outline fonts. These fonts are "hinted," which maintains high-quality images at smaller point sizes. More than 800 additional fonts are available from leading font suppliers including: Linotype, Monotype, URW, Bigelow & Holmes and Autologic. NeWSprint and SPARCprinter are important for Sun's traditional markets, including eletronic publishing and computer-aided software engineering, and is also aimed at other client/server applications such as commercial uses in office automation, financial services and decision support (presentations, spreadsheets, database reports). NeWSprint can connect to printers through standard interfaces such as serial, parallel, SCSI and Ethernet, and comes with software that supports SPARCprinter and specific printers from Hewlett-Packard and Seiko. A development kit is also available that allows quick, easy support of many other printers. SPARCprinter is shipped with NeWSprint, an SBus Printer Card, interface cables and software manuals. Volume discounts are available. All products are available now and are sold through all Sun channels.
