---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN ADDS SUPPORT FOR INFORMIX DATABASE TO SimplifySQL SunFLASH Vol 30 #16 June 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --June 17, 1991-- Sun Microsystems Inc. today introduced an enhanced version of SimplifySQL(TM), a set of productivity tools that greatly simplifies the use of leading database management systems (DBMS) on Sun's SPARC(R) workstations. SimplifySQL 1.1 now fully supports Informix, in addition to the DBMS products previously supported from Ingres, Oracle and Sybase. Sun's SimplifySQL software features window-based tools that make it easy to perform such tasks as retrieving data, generating reports and creating databases. With SimplifySQL, users can access and manipulate Informix, Ingres, Oracle and Sybase databases via pull-down menus and point-and-click mouse controls, rather than needing to memorize and type in Structured Query Language (SQL) commands. These complicated commands were originally designed for programmers and are somewhat different for each DBMS product. In addition, Simplify 1.1 supports queries and reports that extract data from multiple databases running under the same DBMS. SimplifySQL utilizes an intuitive, easy-to-use OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface that gives users of DBMS products from these four vendors a consistent look and feel. "Getting the data you need to make decisions can be complex and difficult," said Byron Ryono, Sun's director of marketing for desktop software products. "A single, graphical interface to several databases is a great way to improve productivity." According to market researcher International Data Corp., almost all Fortune 1000 companies use two or more DBMS products. SimplifySQL greatly eases the complexity of DBMS products for the average user and also helps advanced users more efficiently create and modify database design structures. In addition, SimplifySQL helps DBMS administrators reduce the demands placed on them, since databases are much easier to access and manipulate by the users these administrators support. SimplifySQL Tools Sun's DBMS productivity package includes four graphical tools that allow users to interact with the various databases. The SessionManager tool offers a visual way to select the DBMS product being used and to open and close databases; DataBrowse allows users to create database queries by pointing and clicking on the desired tables and data fields rather than typing in SQL commands; ReportWrite is a graphical report editor that enables users to interactively create customized database reports; and SchemaDesign is an advanced tool that makes possible the graphical creation, viewing and modification of database layouts, including tables, table relationships and data fields. In addition, with SchemaDesign, users can include references to mulitmedia files within a database, which enables database queries to display images or play back sound. Availablility SimplifySQL 1.1 is available now with volume discounts being offered. SimplifySQL runs under OpenWindows(TM) Version 2, using SunOS(TM) system 4.1.1 or 4.1.
