A skilled instructor with in-depth knowledge about the course explains the topic in clear, concise terms. Sun training centers provide labs with dedicated workstations to maximize hands-on experience. ON-SITE TRAINING For customers who want to stay at their own facility, on-site training provides instruction in a familiar environment. DEDICATED TRAINING Sun will schedule a dedicated classroom at a Sun Education facility limited to students from your company. SELF-PACED TRAINING You can also learn on your own with Sun's self-paced courses. Most of Sun's self-paced training materials are available in video and workbook formats. Self-paced training provides maximum flexibility because you can learn at your convenience. You can use these easy-to-review courses for quick references. These training materials are highly interactive to stimulate skill-based learning. TECHNICAL SEMINARS Sun offers a series of one-day technical seminars designed to introduce key concepts, as well as to provide updates on the latest software releases. Taught in a lecture-only format, Sun seminars are held in a local Sun-sponsored facility, Sun Education Center or at your company site. COURSE LICENSING The Right-to-Teach program allows customers to use their own instructors to teach internal classes with Sun Educational course materials. The Right-to-Restyle & Copy program authorizes restyling and extracting Sun course materials for use in customized in-house training classes. ONE-STOP SHOPPING Sun encourages the availability of integrated hardware and software applications training for Sun customers. While Sun provides modern facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, and UNIX training of the highest quality, the application partners supply qualified instructors to deliver course materials for applications/product training. REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS LECTURE/LAB TRAINING Your registrar will reserve a seat for you in the Sun classroom. Follow the Sun Education registration worksheet to plan your course registration. Use one of the following methods to enroll for a course at one of Sun's training centers: * Phone * Facsimile (Fax) * Electronic mail (e-mail) or * Mail Note: Your course enrollment will be confirmed by phone or in writing for fax, e-mail, and mail registrations. SEAT AVAILABILITY You can obtain information on seat availability for Education classes in all locations by two methods: o Phone the registrar o Electronic Mail (United States only)--automatic replies contain information about seat availability (for a 12-week schedule following the date of the reply message) PAYMENT Payment must be received in the form of a check or purchase order or credited to a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express account. Include your name, class, class date, and location (or registration confirmation number) with all forms of payment. For classes taught in U.S. training centers, pay in U.S. currency. For classes taught in the Canada Education Center, U.S. customers should pay in U.S. currency and Canadian customers should pay in Canadian currency (Canadian taxes applicable, refundable to U.S. customers). Payment must be confirmed within 30 days from enrollment or two weeks before the first day of class, whichever comes first. If you enroll within two weeks of the class, payment must be confirmed within 24 hours. When enrolling for courses, be sure you are authorized to incur a financial responsibility for your organization. If you have any problem securing payment within the specified time, contact the registrar to reschedule your course. CONFIRMATION Upon enrollment, we mail you a confirmation package, which includes a registration confirmation number (if we have received payment), information about airline discounts, directions to Sun's facilities, and suggested hotels. (Some hotels offer special corporate rates.) If you have not received this package at least one week before the beginning of class, call the appropriate registrar at one of the numbers listed on the registration worksheet. We recommend that students not make travel and hotel arrangements without this information package. Sun's Corporate Travel Department has negotiated airline discounts with some major carriers for customers attending training courses. To obtain the discount of 40 to 45 percent off full-fare coach flights or five percent off the lowest published fare, follow the instructions in your registration packet. You can obtain your tickets through your own travel agency. CORRESPONDENCE You can contact the registrar by phone during business hours or by e-mail, fax, or mail at any time. Your correspondence should include the following: o Student name, course number, and course dates o Name and phone number of your company's contact for invoicing/accounts payable. This also applies to correspondence by e-mail. (E-mail links are not always bidirectional.) After correspondence or course registration, Sun Education will add your name and address to our database to keep you informed about new courses, events, and announcements. Your name and address can be removed upon request. RESCHEDULING AND CONFIRMATION Course fees are fully refundable if you notify Sun at least 12 business days before the course starts. Rescheduling and cancellations received after this time are nonrefundable. Contact the registrar as soon as you have to reschedule or cancel an enrollment, and we will issue a cancellation number. Student substitutions are acceptable as long as we have been notified at least two days before the class. Your substitute must meet course prerequisites or be approved by Sun Educational Services Management. Normally, Sun gives you at least a two-week notice if we cancel or reschedule a class. In the event of a cancellation, any payment made for the cancelled class is refunded or can be held for a rescheduled class if so desired. Travel arrangements are the student's responsibility, and Sun assumes no liability for any cancellation fees that may be incurred. ON-SITE TRAINING Please call the registrar for information regarding on-site courses. A training manager will contact you to confirm class dates and discuss facility and lab requirements. Please allow 60 days to schedule your on-site course. Tuition is $13,500 per five-day course for up to 12 students, plus instructor travel expenses. Additional students pay $1,000 each. Sun reserves the right to limit class size. DEDICATED TRAINING Please call the registrar to schedule a dedicated class. A training manager will contact you to confirm class dates. Please allow 60 days to schedule your dedicated course. Tuition is 80 percent of list price per student for a minimum of 14 students. Cancellations more than 30 days ahead of the scheduled date will receive a full tuition refund. (Refunds of 50 percent are given for less than 30 days' notice.) This course lets you have a hands-on experience with the latest Sun workstations in a self-paced mode with the added advantage of having a mentor available to answer your questions. This approach to the self-paced training may also enable you to return to your work location and be a mentor for your co-workers. Prerequisites: Experience in service and repair of computers and peripherals. Experience with various computer operating systems. Should be familiar with basic computer concepts such as bus structure, RAM, NVRAM, memory, ASIC, LAN, disk drive, monitor. Overview: This entry-level course of the hardware maintenance curriculum is designed for the person who has computer maintenance experience but no Sun hardware or UNIX experience. This course teaches the knowledge and skills essential to progress successfully through the maintenance curriculum. Lab exercises are heavily emphasized. Classes include entry training for SunOS/UNIX skills and an introduction to the critical SunOS system directories and files that drive the SunOS operation. They also discuss diagnostic tools, boot flow, networking concepts, and Sun hardware terminology.
