---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash New High Performance Disk Subsystems SunFLASH Vol 31 #24 July 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - New 424-Mbyte 3.5" SCSI disk - New 1.3-Gbyte 5.25" SCSI disk - Desktop Storage Module enclosure - New 10.4-Gbyte SCSI Expansion Pedestal - New Server Option Packs for desktops ANNOUNCEMENT BRIEF ------------------ Sun introduces the industry's highest performance SCSI disk drives for both desktop and deskside systems. In addition to being the highest performance drives available, these disks are the most cost effective disk drives ever offered by Sun. With the new disk drives and disk subsystems, customers can achieve the capacities they need at much lower prices. The new 424-Mbyte disk is more than twice the capacity and almost double the performance of the 207-Mbyte disk but is approximately 40% lower in cost/Mbyte. The new 424-Mbyte 3.5" disk is offered both internal to the SPARCstation 2 and in the Desktop Storage Pack. Up to two of these disks can be mounted internal to the SPARCstation 2 providing 848-Mbytes of high performance local mass storage. With the 424-MByte Desktop Disk Packs, the 424-Mbyte disk can be added externally to all desktop systems. The new 1.3-Gbyte SCSI disk is the industry's highest performance SCSI disk. This new drive provides twice the I/O performance and formatted capacity at 30% less cost/Mbyte than the 669-Mbyte disk. This new level of capacity and performance is available in three configurations: internal to the SPARCsystem 470, in a new desktop single disk expansion unit, and in a new deskside expansion pedestal. The new 1.3-Gbyte Desktop Storage Module is available to provide a compact and flexible expansion storage solution for desktop systems. In addition to the 1.3-Gbyte SCSI drive, a version of the Desktop Storage Module is available with a 2.3-Gbyte 8mm backup tape drive. The Desktop Storage Module has the same footprint as the Desktop Storage Pack (and SPARCstation IPX) to allow for easy stacking of peripheral devices such as SunCDs, 8mm tapes, and disks. In addition to providing a compact and flexible storage solution, the Desktop Storage Module also features the same sleek styling features found on the Desktop Storage Pack. Internally, the Desktop Storage Module is designed and constructed with the highest quality components to ensure longlife and reliable drive operation. To simplify configuring desktop server systems, a new File Server Option Pack is available using the new Desktop Storage Modules. Included in the attractive price of this option pack is a 1.3-Gbyte Disk Desktop Storage Module, a 2.3-Gbyte 8mm Tape Desktop Storage Module, and a SunCD Desktop SunCD Pack. The File Server Option Pack is supported on all desktop systems. A new SCSI Expansion Pedestal is also available for use with the SPARCserver 2. The SCSI Expansion Pedestal can be configured with up to eight 1.3-Gbyte drives for a total pedestal capacity of 10.4-Gbytes. In addition, the pedestal may be configured to house up to two 2.3-Gbyte 8mm backup tape drives, or one SunCD and one 2.3-Gbyte 8mm tape. Two pre-configured Database Server Option Packs, the 2.6-Gbyte pedestal and a 5.2-Gbyte pedestal are available. Both feature installed SunCD and 2.3-Gbyte 8mm tape options and include an SBus SCSI host adapter. This new pedestal puts more storage on the desktop systems than ever before. FEATURES AND BENEFITS --------------------- 424-Mbyte SCSI Disk - Increases I/O performance, almost twice that of the 207-Mbyte drive, at lower cost/Mbyte - Increases SPARCstation 2 internal capacity from 414-Mbytes to 848-Mbytes - Double the expansion capacity of the 207-Mbyte Desktop Disk Pack - A very aggressive price 207-Mbyte 424-Mbyte ----------- ------- Formatted Capacity 207-Mbyte 424-Mbyte Seek Time 16 msec 14 msec Rotational Latency 8.3 msec 6.8 msec Raw Data Rate 1.6 MB/s 2.8 MB/s average Form Factor 3.5-inch 3.5-inch Price internal disk $1,500 $1,900 Price Desktop Disk Pack $1,700 $2,100 FEATURES AND BENEFITS --------------------- 1.3-Gbyte SCSI Disk - Doubles the performance of the 669-Mbyte drive - Lower cost/Mbyte than any other drive ever offered by Sun - Increases SPARCsystem 470 max internal storage from 2.0 Gbytes to 3.9 Gbytes - Dramatically increases the maximum storage for all desktop systems: up to 20.8 Gbytes for the SPARCstation 2, 15.6 Gbytes for the SPARCstation IPX and SPARCstation IPC, and 5.2 Gbytes for the SPARCstation ELC - Industry's highest performance disk drives at competitive price - Higher random performance and capacity; the new SCSI drive is ideal for SPARCserver 2 applications 669-Mbyte 1.3-Gbyte ----------- ------- Capacity 669-Mbyte 1.3-Gbyte Seek Time 16 msec 11.5 msec Rotational Latency 8.3 msec 5.5 msec Raw Disk Data Rate 1.8 MB/s 4.0 MB/s average Form Factor 5.25-inch 5.25-inch Price internal disk $3,900 $5,300 Price external disk $4,100 $5,500 HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ The new SCSI disks require SunOS-4.1.1. For use on desktop systems, the new 1.3-Gbyte SCSI disk also requires a feature CD to supply the necessary driver enhancements for proper operation of the disk. This supplemental CD is shipped with every desktop 1.3-Gbyte option. Notes: The new SCSI disks work with the current VME SCSI host adapter on the SPARCsystem 470 as well as with the embedded SCSI port on the desktop systems and the current SBus SCSI host adapter. The SCSI Expansion Pedestal uses the system's embedded SCSI port to control the SunCD and 2.3-Gbyte 8mm tape. The disks are mounted on up to two trays, each capable of housing four disks. Each of these disk trays is connected to the system using a separate SBus SCSI host adapter. Any combination of supported options up to the max of eight 1.3-Gbyte disks and two 2.3-Gbyte 8mm backup tapes (or one 8mm tape with SunCD) can be ordered. Customers may mix the new disks with 669-Mbyte or 207-Mbyte SCSI disks on one SCSI bus. (Mixing of an internal 207-Mbyte disk with a new internal 424-Mbyte disk is allowed in the SPARCstation 2.) A CD-ROM will ship with all of the affected 1.3-Gbyte disk products until the next SunOS release. Customers who do not have any access to a SunCD drive will be able to order this software at no charge on 1/4-inch tape.
