---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunSoft Releases New Volume Of Compact Disc With SPARC Applications SunFLASH Vol 31 #18 July 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enables Users to Browse Software at the Desktop Creates Innovative Channel for Software Developers MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- July 23, 1991 -- SunSoft, the systems software subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced immediate availability of Catalyst(TM) CDware(TM) Volume 2, a compact disc that enables Sun system users to effectively shop for software by offering a wide variety of applications to sample at their own desktops. The CD also gives independent software vendors (ISVs) a new and innovative channel to promote and distribute their software products to Sun users. CDware Volume 2 features self-running demonstrations, electronic brochures and trial programs for 40 software packages from 26 vendors (see Table 1). With a SunCD(TM) player, SPARCstation(TM) users can sample a variety of operations with many popular SPARC(R) packages, including Lotus 1-2-3, FrameMaker, dBase and Clarity's Rapport. CDware also contains a complete electronic catalog of the more than 3,300 available SPARC solutions from third-party software and hardware vendors. CDware uses OPEN LOOK(TM), the intuitive graphical user interface that helps users run programs by using pull-down menus and point-and- click mouse controls. Once users have tested an application and decided to purchase the package, they can contact the developer or reseller to do so. In some cases, a user can receive entire applications immediately by calling for a code that unlocks the specified program and installs a full function application. "CDware gives Sun users an added level of convenience and confidence when purchasing software," said Bill Larson, vice president of sales and marketing for SunSoft. "CDware also creates sales opportunities for SPARC ISVs by giving them a new outlet to promote and distribute their products." An ISV can purchase space from SunSoft on the CDware disc -- in the same way advertisers purchase pages in a magazine -- and effectively gain access to Sun's entire installed base of SPARC users, offering each an in-depth demonstration of its program's capabilities and special advantages. CDware Volume 2 will be bundled with every SPARCstation from Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation and is available to existing SPARCstation users at no charge. CDware Volume 2 is the second release in an ongoing series of compact discs. CDware Volume 1 was first distributed in November 1990 with 20 demonstration programs and more than 40,000 users. Based on its success, SunSoft plans to distribute more than 100,000 copies of CDware Volume 2 this year. Subsequent CDware releases will include additional software products and demonstrations.
