This software resides in part on an IBM mainframe running the MVS operating system, and in part on Sun systems that have installed SunLink Channel Gateway. OpenConnect GTO allows file transfers using the standard SunOS 'ftp' program. Rates up to 450Kbytes/second (disk-to-disk) have been achieved. I believe that this product is ideal for a number of applications that require large data volumes to be moved between Suns and mainframes. Enclosed is the announcement text from Mitek OpenConnect Systems. For more information contact Paul Sargent at Mitek OpenConnect systems (214 490 4090). OpenConnect Systems OpenConnect/GTO ------------------- FAST DATA TRANSFER WITH OpenConnect/GTO --------------------------------------- As the power and size of distributed computing applications in a Sun computer working environment have increased, it has become apparent that traditional data transfer methods are too slow to meet new system demands. Anyone faced with the tedious and time-consuming task of moving large files between mainframe and Sun machines has realized the need for a faster solution. Now it's here. OpenConnect/GTO (Gateway Transfer Option) eliminates some of the file transfer headaches felt when moving large files. In cases where a Sun server is connected directly to a mainframe via an S/370 Channel, the OpenConnect/GTO (OC/GTO) can provide a bi-directional, high-speed data transfer capable of allowing the connected Sun server, using its own File Transfer Protocol (FTP) applications, to transfer data at speeds of more than 450,000 bytes per second. A SOFTWARE SOLUTION FOR SUN SERVERS ----------------------------------- OpenConnect/Control Program(TM) (OC/CP) runs on a mainframe under MVS operating system, implementing the high-speed OC/GTO channel protocol for the mainframe. OC/CP also acts as a gateway to VTAM. As such, OC/CP is able to connect to the channel-connect Sun server and with either applications running locally or those remotely connected through VTAM. The ability to connect to VTAM permits a single copy of OC/CP on the mainframe to provide distributed applications with high-speed data transfers over an SNA network. OC/CP has the ability to connect with multiple Sun servers. Residing on the Sun server, the OC/GTO software implements the other end of the high-speed channel protocol, and acts as a gateway to TCP (Berkeley) sockets on the Sun. This combination results in the ability of standard TCP applications on the Sun or others on TCP/IP network to communicate with SNA applications using the OpenConnect/GTO protocol. NETWORK-WIDE COMMUNICATIONS --------------------------- Because OpenConnect/GTO connects to TCP sockets on the Sun server, any TCP/IP host which implements the standard TCP/IP applications, Telnet and FTP, can communicate with mainframe applications via OpenConnect/GTO. MAINFRAME CONNECTIVITY VIA OpenConnect/GTO ------------------------------------------ Since OpenConnect/GTO provides connectivity between TCP/IP and SNA protocols, mainframe VTAM applications may connect to Sun applications via the OC/GTP. OpenConnect Systems provides a variety of applications which can be used in this manner to function transparently as peer applications to the standard Sun TCP/IP applications such as Telnet and FTP. One such application, OpenConnect/FTP(TM) (OC/FTP) is available for mainframe users who want to realize maximum advantage of OpenConnect/GTO's high-speed data transfers. Bench tests of the OpenConnect/GTO have achieved file transfer rates of over 450 KB/sec from a channel-connected Sun server, using Sun's channel interface kit with a data streaming channel connection, to a mainframe OC/FTP application. An equally impressive 300 KB/sec was achieved during a file transfer between a server and a remote mainframe application connected via T1 lines using SNA. When terminal emulation is required, mainframe users can tap into the Sun server's Telnet Server application using OpenConnect/TELNET(TM) Full Screen to attain either VT100 or VT200 emulation from a 3270-type terminal. This permits users to take full advantage of the near instantaneous communications afforded by the OpenConnect/GTO. Also available is a Line Mode version. Another useful application available from OpenConnect Systems is the OpenConnect/SAM(TM) (Socket Access Method). The OpenConnect/SAM offers an open approach to mainframe software development, allowing third parties to write socket-oriented mainframe applicatons implementing the OpenConnect/GTO protocols offering connectivity with TCP applications running over a network. US Pricing: Sun Software GTO: $15K IBM Software: OpenConnect/CP $5K Telnet Client $14K FTP Server $7K FTP Client $8K Prices above are approximate for a 3090-100 class system. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
