---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Workstation Market Survey SunFLASH Vol 25 #6 January 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun remains the uncontested leader in the workstation market, according to Dataquest's 1990 workstation market survey released January 2, 1991 (and reported in the U. S. press January 3rd, 1991). HP and DEC each LOST significant market share (-1.4% and -3.3% respectively), and IBM's 0.9% increase was still less than Sun's gain. Market 1989-90 Point Vendor Revenue Share Growth Change ====== ======= ====== ======== ====== Sun Microsystems $2,142 29.1 25.6% +1.0 Hewlett-Packard 1,672 22.7 14.2 -1.4 Digital 1,301 17.7 2.2 -3.3 Intergraph 497 6.8 18.0 -0.2 Silicon Graphics 398 5.4 35.9 +0.6 IBM 247 3.5 65.5 +0.9 Others 1,094 14.9 46.4 +2.5 The study notes, "...Sun Microsystems remains uncontested as the number one workstation vendor. The end of 1990 found Sun Microsystems at the front of the pack, outperforming most other vendors. On the other hand, Hewlett-Packard and Digital have not been keeping up with the pack. HP has been caught without a competitive low-end RISC product line and without any Motorola 68040 systems to ship. On the other hand, Digital is caught in the transition between the decline of its VMS-based workstations, which have a higher average selling price, and the ramp-up phase of its DECstations. Intergraph held its own, with roughly the same market share as last year. Silicon Graphics, although small, has continued to grow faster than the total workstation market and has gained some market share. IBM, the new kid on the block, has gained some market share, even with limited software and with only a few models within the RS/6000 product line shipping during the year." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
