---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun and Philips Sign Major Reseller Agreement SunFLASH Vol 26 #18 February 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philips Information Systems to Use Sun's SPARCStations In New System MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --February 19, 1991-- Sun Microsystems and Philips Information Systems have signed an agreement that will allow Philips to resell Sun's complete line of SPARC(R) stations. A division of the multinational firm N.V. Philips of The Netherlands, Philips Information Systems plans on using the Sun hardware as the computing platform for a new, integrated document management system for commercial users. This turnkey system will automate the handling of such paper intensive tasks as the processing of tax returns by government agencies or policy claims by the insurance industry. Philips will announce the introduction of the new system later this year. The networked system will allow organizations to greatly enhance productivity and thereby increase response time to customer inquiries. According to J. Stevens, manager of the Image and Document Management Group in Philips Information Systems, the Sun SPARCstations were chosen because of their power and performance, as well as the leadership of SPARCstations(TM) and SPARCservers(TM) in their marketplace. "As an open systems supplier, we're committed to industry standards and leading-edge technology, as is Sun," he said. The Sun computers will run sophisticated document management software developed by Philips Information Systems, a company that leads in the field of office automation solutions such as document image handling. The new Philips system will be sold worldwide. The choice of SPARC hardware for the new system underscores Sun's fast-growing success in commercial markets, said Carol Bartz, vice president of worldwide field operations at Sun. "Thirty percent of our sales in fiscal 1990 was from the commercial area. Major partners like Philips will help fuel our expansion in this important market."
